Influence Waterfowl Calls
Is it cords or coords! I do not think I have ever seen any one use coords but I have someone telling me that it is. Every one I see uses the word cords to shorten coordinates! What do you think? Quote Link to comment
Motorcycle_Mama
Cords would be something akin to a thin rope. Or maybe a measurement for firewood. Coords could be a abbreviation for the word coordinates. Edited August 17, 2008 by Motorcycle_Mama Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I've always used coords and that's what I've usually seen others using. Makes sense to because as MM pointed out, coords is an abbreviation of coordinates, while cords would have something to do with string or firewood. Quote Link to comment
+Isonzo Karst
Coords is what I see as well. Oddly though, most abbreviate camouflaged as cammoed (doubling the "m"). And rarely does anyone use the apostrophe to indicated the omitted letters: Coord's - camo'ed. Quote Link to comment
+Isonzo Karst
I was curious about this, so I did a GSAK search for "coords" searching everywhere (description, logs, notes) on a database with 431 caches. 93 instances of "coords". I then did the same search using "cords", and it found 36 instances of "cords". So it's "coords" at roughly 3 to 1. Quote Link to comment
Motorcycle_Mama
I think some people are just lazy in their terminology. Probably it's the same people who use the "word" prolly in online forums. Quote Link to comment

+Sandy Hams
If I were abbreviating or shortening a word I would use a portion of the correct spelling of the original word -- i.e. coords for coordinates. However, is it really a big deal? Quote Link to comment
+J-Way
If I were abbreviating or shortening a word I would use a portion of the correct spelling of the original word -- i.e. coords for coordinates. However, is it really a big deal? The spelling, grammar, and general writing style in the geocaching forums, cache logs, and in the typical cache description are bad enough to make most high school English teachers weep with frustration. Many people have the legitimate excuse that English is a second (or third, or forth) language; most people just don't care that the writing they are publishing for all the world to see reads like a 3rd grade book report. So no, people omitting the letter "o" and an apostrophe is not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things. For the record, a more correct abbreviation would be "coords" or "coord's", pronounced with two syllables as "koh-ords". Quote Link to comment
