Cushie Butterfield Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I know there was a thread when the new iphone was announced as having GPS but looking back there wasn't much discussion. Has anybody got one and used it for caching? Is it possible to use it to enter co-ords at all? Quote
rutson Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 36 replies is hardly "not much discussion"! http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...7&hl=iphone Quote
lordelph Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 (edited) I've got one - there's not much in the way of software yet to aid cachers but that will change. There's one app at the moment called Geopher Lite which is pretty basic, but lets you enter coords and follow an arrow. It does seem a little laggy making it hard to use when hunting close to a cache, though this may be a flaw in the iPhone itself rather. There's another one in production called Geode which looks promising. In short, I think the iPhone will be a useful secondary tool, particularly for browsing nearby caches, logging etc, but at the moment, you probably wouldn't want to use one without having a "proper" GPSr in your pocket I'm writing a geocaching app myself too, it's a few weeks from completion though. It's a fun platform to write software for! Edited August 11, 2008 by lordelph Quote

currykev Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I've had a quick try and the browser (in the shop) worked extremely well for GC.com and Google mapping too.I didn't really have a good look at the gps side of things. It pinpointed my position on a map,but I couldn't see if it showed position in number formats...ie for finding nearby caches. +Cushie Butterfield Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 I bought mine at the weekend but haven't had chance to play with it yet. I did use my old iphone for paperless caching and even got a ftf when the cache was published and popped into my email while I was out and about. I need to trawl through apps to see what would help with storing pdf's etc. I'm thinking that maybe the MobileMe cloud might help but it still depends on the 3G signal strength and I'm not really sure what it does yet. +Dorsetgal & GeoDog Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I have found my 3GiPhone excellent fr urban caching, especially when the GPSr cannot get or hold on to any fix. It is pretty simple to use it when the GPSr is letting you down, bring up the cache page on Safari and then select the google maps option. This brings a red pin to the location you are searching for, then get directions, all being well you get a little blue bubble which will travel as you walk in the directing of the red pin. When the point of the poin is in the centre of the bubble you should be at GZ. Looking forward to seeing some more elegant apps for caching though! First cache I tried with my new iPhone sticks in my mind though ... see log. Quote
Cushie Butterfield Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 Oh crikey, scarey stuff. Will geodog attack on command? Thanks for explaining the simple way to use the phone, I'm not sure I would have worked it out for a while. Quote
