Another "pick-my-GPSr" topic

I just upgraded to premium, and PQ's are definitely worth the thirty bucks. Currently, I have a Magellan eXplorist 200 to hunt, a Garmin c550 to get there, and I am paperless with my Palm Treo 700p. While the Magellan has been great for what I bought it for a few years ago (marking limb and trot lines), I am getting tired of manually entering the coord's into the eXplorist.

 

I have been reading for days about all of the different models, and I am not really sure what I need - or even want in a new unit. Amazon appears to have some pretty good deals on Garmins, but I have no clue which one is right for me. Here's what I'm looking for; any help narrowing it down to < 3 units will be appreciated:

 

1. Obviously, I want to be able to hook it up to the computer and download the coordinates.

2. I don’t care if it has a color screen.

3. at least as tough as the eXplorist.

4. <$200

 

If there's anything else I'm overlooking - let me know.

Venture HC

 

Both do all you want (with the addition of mapping ability) and can be found for under $200.

 

 

The other cheaper models (save the very basic eTrex H) don't have the better GPS chip. If your upgrading you might as well get the newer technology.

Venture HC - color screen, usb connections, long battery life, rugged, high sensitivity, some mapping memory, nice form factor, easy to use - about $140

 

Legend HCx - adds expandable memory, autorouting capability and more waypoints. About $190.

I agree. What about the GPSMAP 60? Does the antenna give better accuracy than the Legend or Venture? I might be able to stretch the budget out to $250.

The Delorme PN-20 refurbs come in at $200--including mapping software. If you're covered by the c550 for your automotive needs, the PN-20 should work great for hiking/biking and geocaching activities. I don't hunt myself, but the hunters on the Delorme forum speak highly of it for that purpose because of the highly detailed topo maps. Uses USGS quads, too.
