+LionsLair
Is it possible to create an optical illusion on a coin? something like these? Just curious Quote Link to comment
+Crowesfeat30
Yikes!!! My eyes!! My eyes!!! However, I don't see why not. They work on paper as well as monitors after all, why not metal & enamels? Hard enamel would work best, I think and bright colors. I like the last two images best. CF30 Quote Link to comment

+Eric K
I really see the 1st one and 4th one the best. I think you could do them as a photo print. However you may want to first shink the images down to coin size to see if the images would still have the optical illusion effect in a smaller size. Quote Link to comment
+applewomyn
I think the only option would be to do them as a photo print on the coin - otherwise, doing them with enamel requires that each color be contained by an outlines (which holds the enamel) - this might mess up the illusion. Certainly on the ones where a gradient of color is used... I think those would *have* to be done as photo images. Cool idea to try! Quote Link to comment
+ECplus3
Nope. I'm not seeing any movement. Then again, I've never been able to see those 3d images either. Quote Link to comment

+Droo
I can't open the pic's files so I can only guess at what's going on. Have you seen the back of the GW6 coin? Is that the illusion you're refering to? Quote Link to comment
+mousekakat
I'm working on something like this already with Castleman... not sure when we're going to have it done, but we've actually chosen one of the above images to give a shot with! Just a little FYI! Naomi Quote Link to comment
+fox-and-the-hound
The first four would have to be printed I think, but the last one could be done in metal and hard enamel. The trick would be to find an illusion that works with repeated solid colors and use the metal color as one of them. Here's what the last one would like in copper... Quote Link to comment

+The_Geomonkeys
From a technical standpoint it could be done but it must be done as a photo print. These illusions work because of micro-sicades that are made by your eyes at they adjust and scan the environment. (those of you who do not see motion simply make fewer of these eye movements that the rest of us). If you were to do this with the enamel process the raised metal would in fact stop the illusion from working. Also the selection of colors is important. Often you will see that they must be oppositional colors (red/blue). Yeah, I feel like a geek now...but that's what I get for spending 11+ weeks studying these types of illusions and how they are perceived. Quote Link to comment
+WWC-World's Worst Cacher
yep there are some processes where that could work. The biggest concern I would have is how big the coin would need to be to acheive the desired effect. I suspect that if the coin where to small the illusion would be lost. Quote Link to comment

Do you think it could be accomplished with gold and a purple/blue hard enamel? It would be flush and have directly opposing/complimentary-contrasting colors. Quote Link to comment
+Droo
Now they're showing up! I wish they hadn't as they just made me nauseaous. Wait! I'm not saying your idea or your art has made me sick. I mean it has but I'm not saying I don't like it.... does that make me a masochist now? Quote Link to comment

That's right along the lines of the thing I was wondering if it would work... I think a coin like this would be a bit hit... and I'm surprised nobody has done one yet... Quote Link to comment

I'm very interested in watching this project come to completion. I was planning on something like this but am still working on some personal coin designs so I'm glad someone will beat me to it! A friend has the photo of the girl with four eyes hanging in his kitchen. This one would need permission from the artist for the use of that picture because of copyright issues.
