cownchicken
Four years ago Baa! placed a cache on the Swellendam Hiking trail, (GCJ6RE) on Droster's Pass. When they left to live in the UK in 2006 the cache was given up for adoption. We adopted it for maintenance purposes only. We will be going on the trail in a few weeks time and are wondering if we may log this cache as a find. We did not place it and have not found it before. What do you think? Quote Link to comment
geocacher_coza
I think you can as you did not find it before. It will be all new for you even though you own it now. Quote Link to comment
cincol
I agree with geocacher_coza. I have adopted 2 caches that were "abandoned" by an ex-pat who left the country. I logged them as "found" the first time that I visited them as they were new finds for me. I had never been there before despite me being the "new" owner. Since then I have visited regularly for maintenance and now they are treated as any other cache that I own. Incidently, the original owner is still acknowledged in the cache listings as the original owner as well. I know of a few other examples of cachers, both here and in SA, where they have adopted caches that they have never "found" and then later logged as "found" once they got round to visiting them. In my book there is nothing wrong with that as they had never been there before to log their names in the logbook. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the hike andthat the weather plays along! +tomtwogates
Go for it as said above - you have not yet found before - happy hunting! Quote Link to comment
CapeDoc
and are wondering if we may log this cache as a find This again brings up the issue of what the numbers mean. I am not competing in any way, so don't really care what you do. Having met you and from my experience of your caches and logs, you two have inscrutable geocaching ethics and play the game most admirably. I really think you should just trust what you feel is correct. Quote Link to comment

Carbon Hunter
Sounds like a Found to me. What if you had found them before adopting? Would you be expected to change the log to a "note" - I think not. I reckon it's fine. Quote Link to comment
