+Vater_Araignee
Hey all I'm attempting to make accurate trail maps available on line. Go to my site at Geo.Warlocks-Box.com and read how you can help me complete this project. Quote Link to comment
+Cliff's Notes
That sounds like an awesome and worthwhile project! Are there programs like that for other states and parks I want to do more of the outdoorsy thing and this may be worthwhile. I am not in Michigan but would love to find projects I can help I went out and bought my shiny new GPS and this will make me feel like I am doing something with it. If someone wanted to help they what? Start tracking at the trail head save waypoints and and crossings. So I can download off my Colorado? Can you save it in the Garmin with a specific track name? I would be willing to start a google map for your state even make you a collaborator. Or we could revers the roles. Indiana's state park trails are complete and a freely available download for GIS users. good luck You can get pdf maps online for MI you can even get free leaflets from the parks themselves. The problems are: I would not call them accurate due to the lack of detail. They don't show the spurs that can get the ignorant into trouble. example: Pinckney Recreation Area Approximate Size: 11000 (Acres) Unit Map I have not been on every marked trail but if all the sub and spur trails that lead from the trails I have been on are something to go by then I would estimate that the marked/mapped trails are less than 30% of what is there. Brighton Rec only about 4947 acres is so bad that I realized I needed help and that expanded to doing the whole state. I always say that even if a person thinks they can't use a map they are still better off with than without. The same applies with a good map vs. a poor one. Thanks for the luck. Quote Link to comment
+Vater_Araignee
I just had a thought. Anybody that wants to do something like this for their state contact me. If I get enough interests I would be willing to donate webspace and an email address for the cause. I also wouldn't be appose to eventually getting MapStateTrails.US or even better, having it donated to me. Quote Link to comment
+Vater_Araignee
For those of you that might be interested here is a link to my current work on the bridle trails at BRA. The blue lines are exports from my GPSr. The red lines are from me visually averaging the tracks. When you see iconic markings extremely close at max zoom it is because I have taken the point on different days and eventually I will start averaging them. I also hope to make ever POI available as a single downloadable. I did want to add spots that I would call scenic but after talking with family I found out that what I call scenic, most call hell.
