Micro Caches / Gauss Meter

2 part question

1) Would a Gauss Meter pick up the magnets on those nasty little 1/2 inch nano caches. There's one on a train I've been DNF'in forever.

2) I think it would work - totally cheating or not?

1) I'm not so certain that would work. Electromagnetic fields are sensed through various methods. That item looks like it uses a coil to sense an alternating field. It might not work on a static field that a magnet puts out.

Additionally, of the nanos I've seen they are built so the magnet sits in a metal cup that bends and concentrates the magnetic field for extra holding power. Not nearly as much of the magnetic field escapes.

2) Nope. Well, no more so that using a metal detector to find an ammo box or using your brain to shortcut a puzzle or multi.

Thanks - I was hoping someone would have scientific input. My other thought was to put small magnetic reed switches in a 'wand' with a light / buzzer. Thought being it would activate if passed by. God I hate those black little things, but the wife loves them <_<

I've never heard of using a Gauss Meter but I wouldn't consider it cheating any more than using a flashlight or inspection mirror to help find a cache.

BTW, I spent well over 2 hours (and four visits) searching for that cache. I had 11 DNFs before it was first found including several from a few cacher that had over 1000 finds each.

It's a tricky one, and what made it even more difficult for me is that it was placed by a cacher that had no previous hides and only one fine (in 2004) so it was hard to predict how it (or even what) might be hidden. It also survived a power wash and a complete (well, maybe not exactly complete) repainting of the train before of found.
