+wasted
this may be impossible or simpler than I think, if it is I have no idea how or where to do it... one of my units is a non routing unit(summit hc) with ibycus's maps, alot of roads and city streets can be quite long and when your looking for a specific place(with an address out of a phone book or whatever) with no auto routing one of the next best things IMO would be to be able to convert the actual address your looking for into coordinates and enter it as a waypoint on the gpsr, is there any way to go about doing this? +coggins
Yep, with google maps you can find an address and then send it to your GPS: Start here as an example: LINK And above the map is a envelope icon with Send to the right. Click this and on the left side you will see a GPS link. Select that and in the "Brand" pulldown select "Garmin". At the bottom on the page is a "send" button. Click it and you will get the Garmin Communicator Plugin page, where you finally send it to you GPS. Edited July 15, 2008 by coggins Quote Link to comment
+stepshep
Yep, the process is called Geocoding. Check out this Google hits for some top pages. I use http://geocoder.us/ Quote Link to comment
+coggins
I use http://geocoder.us/ I used to use that as well when I was loading by hand with my yellow eTrex. Too bad they don't have the Garmin Communicator on their site. Quote Link to comment

It would be nice if I could direct-link my CO with the site; maybe I'll send them an email. Quote Link to comment

I have a Summit HC, but don't know about Ibycus's maps. However, I use Garmin's MetroGuide Australia v6 (non-routing product) very successfully. You don't need to find the coordinates of an address manually - you can just navigate there directly (using a "straight line" route, not "turn-by-turn" routing.) To navigate to an address on a MetroGuide map segment loaded in the Summit HC: 1. Press and hold "Find" 2. Scroll to "Addresses" 3. Enter a city / suburb, and a street name and number The unit will list the best match(es) - select one, and then you can either "Save" as a waypoint, or else just navigate to it. If Ibycus's maps are programmed similarly, you should be able to navigate to an address, using a similar approach. If the Ibycus maps don't have street numbers, and the streets are so long that you can't guess where a particular street number might be located, you could try using Google Maps http://maps.google.com/ to find the actual address (or a route to the address), and then use Gmap2Gpx http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/ to give you the GPX code, which you can copy and past into Notepad, and then "save as" a GPX file, which can be opened in MapSource, and then download to your GPSr. (This very handy applet will save single locations or even full routes which you create in Google Maps as GPX format, so you can effectively do your turn-by-turn routing in Google Maps, save as GPX, then load to your GPSr to get a full turn-by-turn route or track on your Summit HC.) Hope this helps! PS: All of the above comments appeared while I was composing mine, and probably largely supersede my reply. One thing to note - I had not seen the Google Maps "Send to GPS" feature before (Thanks, coggins!) Note that as far as I can tell, this feature will only send a single waypoint at a time, which is fine, if that is what you are after, but it doesn't seem to be an option if you have used Google Maps to get directions from Point A to Point B. (In this case, I only get the "Send to Email" option appearing.) If you want to get a full turn-by-turn route transferred to your GPSr, you may still find the Gmap2Gpx tool to be useful.
