RIP - Maddie of Team Maddie

Recommended Posts

It is with great sadness that Lynn and I pass on the unfortunate news that our dear beloved Maddie passed away this afternoon. A few weeks ago she was diagnosed with Canine Auto Immune Hemolytic Anemia. Since then she has been battling the illness with medications etc. This weekend she took a severe turn for the worse and was obviously suffering greatly. We therefore had to make the decision to put her to sleep.

Having had the pleasure of meeting Maddie several times,I'm horrified to hear of her loss

I know this won't bring her back, but may be it will help you at this time of loss

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet

goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run

and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and

comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;

those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we

remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each

miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops

and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body

quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green

grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,

you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy

kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and

you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from

your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Hope that the following helps.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

The Rainbow Bridge

inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,

Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.

Where the friends of man and woman do run,

When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,

Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,

For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.

Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,

Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,

Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.

All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,

Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;

Together again, both person and pet.

So they run to each other, these friends from long past,

The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,

Has turned into joy once more in each heart.

They embrace with a love that will last forever,

And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

Lend Me A Pup

I will lend to you for a while, a pup, God said,

For you to love her while she lives and mourn for her when she's dead.

Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe two or three

But will you, 'till I call her back, take care of her for me.

She'll bring her charms to gladden you and (should her stay be brief)

you'll always have her memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise she will stay since all from earth return

But there are lessons taught below I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true

And from the folk that crowd's life's land I have chosen you.

Now will you give her all your love

Nor think the labor vain,

Nor hate me when I come to take my Pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say "Dear Lord Thy Will be Done,"

For all the joys this Pup will bring, the risk of grief we'll run.

We'll shelter her with tenderness we'll love her while we may

And for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay

But should you call her back much sooner than we've planned,

We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.

If, by our love, we've managed, your wishes to achieve

In memory of her we loved to help us while we grieve,

When our faithful bundle departs this world of strife,

We'll have yet another pup, and love her all her life

We've never met, and I never met Maddie, but I feel enormous sympathy for you. My nephew's Labrador cross, Rocky, who I often dogsat for and often took caching with me, died earlier this year from the same cause. Much as with Maddie, Rocky was battling the illness and it was looking reasonably hopeful, then he took a sudden turn for the worse and died. My thoughts and feelings are with you both in this very sad time for you.

Martin & Lynn,

We've never met, nor did we ever meet Maddie, but here's a poem that Alibags left for a TB I picked up some time ago. The TB was in memory of the owner's dog:

OLD DOGS DO NOT DIE

We have a secret, you and I,

That no one else shall know,

For who, but I can see you lie,

Each night, in fireglow?

And who but I can reach my hand

Before we go to bed,

And feel the living warmth of you

And touch your silken head?

And only I walk woodland paths,

And see, ahead of me,

Your small form racing with the wind,

So young again, and free.

And only I can see you swim

In every brook I pass.

And, when I call, no one but I

Can see the bending grass

It makes me well up every time, but it is such a poignant poem.

Big hugs to you both. I'm sure Maddie will remain in spirit with you for many many many years to come. So sorry for you both. x

Oh how sad I was to read this thread....

Maddie was one of my favourite dogs... ever.

I am not a great dog lover, and in fact am scared of quite a few dogs, but Maddie was one of my favourite dogs, one who was always in tune with Lynn and Martin, and was a pleasure to cache with...

My love goes to you both.

It's been a few years since I last saw Maddie at Taunton when you came down for the Zummerzet event. I can only try to imagine how you feel having never lost a pet before. Thanks for letting us all know, and thanks for posting some nice photos of her so we can remember her at her best )

Maddie at the 2005 Shrops camping event.

Beautiful picture. What a great looking friend you had there.

I remember when we lost our last dog. I was hit pretty hard. I resisted getting a new puppy too quickly, but my wife insisted that we get a puppy from a shelter when we were volunteering with them on an adoption day. That was the day we were blessed with the gift of J.C. the puppymonster. The rest with him is history.

Though the memory of Maddie will never be gone, hopefully you can open your hearts soon and bring another pal into your life. After the great experience we have had with J.C. and the hole he instantly filled in our life, and as he is now getting older, we know that we will get another puppy (and maybe two next time) soon after he crosses the rainbow bridge as well. Thanks for posting these great pictures.
