creating pocket Query

Hi.

Used to go geocaching with paper and our old GPS, but have now bought a Colorado 300, which seems quite good so far.

Have (with a bit of trouble) found out how to 'send to Garmin', so I can bring the the discribtions of the caches.

But what really causes trouble is to create a Pocket Query. A lot of places is shortlys descriebed how good it is, but I cannot find out how to do.....

 

Hope that anybody can help. Tomorrow we are leaving for holiday in france and England.

Under "My Account", right hand side there is a box titled "Premium Features" ... select the link titled "Build Pocket Queries"

Once you are there, there are a couple of things to watch out for.

 

First, at the top, be sure that you check at least one day of the week on which the query is to run. Check the current day if you want the results soon. Watch out for time zone differences. This is "server time" which is in the Pacific time zone in the US.

 

Second, set your criteria via the long list of controls in the middle. In most cases, the default settings are not bad for your first PQ. But feel free to tweak them as needed.

 

Third, at the bottom, be sure you select GPS Exchange Format (.gpx) from the format drop-down list. And be sure to check the box to compress files into .zip format.

 

Now, click the Submit Information button. Wait for the e-mail with the .zip file attachment to appear in your mailbox. In many cases, this will appear within a few minutes (if you selected the current day of the week). But in some cases it can take several hours.

 

Copy the .zip file attachment from your e-mail program to your local hard drive. On Windows XP and above, this will appear as a compressed folder. It will (typically) contain two .gpx files. One contains the caches themselves. The other contains additional waypoints such as parking areas, trail heads, etc. I don't remember the naming convention, but it'll be obvious which is which (not that it matters).

 

Connect the Colorado to your computer in mass storage mode. Mass storage mode is the default unless you have selected the spanner interface instead of Garmin serial (unlikely in your case). Copy both .gpx files to [drive]:\Garmin\GPX on the first of the two drives which represent your Colorado. (The first drive is internal memory. The second is your SD card, if you have one installed.) After dismounting the USB device properly, unplug the unit and restart. You're ready to go.

 

You can also put caches on the SD card if you have one. However, the unit behaves slightly differently with regard to loading the caches. Best to keep them in internal memory if at all possible.

A word to the wise: If you have not yet backed up the entire contents of your Colorado to your computer hard drive, now is the time
