Taking Geocoins...

I wanted to know if people have ever taken a geocoin from their own cache? Either because it would be their first geocoin ever... or if they new that they were going on a trip and thought, "Hey, why not take it and send to 'undisclosed location'"?

Just wanted to see people's opinions on this...

Yes, several times! Once, I saw a note in one of my caches that a present had been dropped off. I hurried out to swap coins and found probably my very first coin in a cache (unactivated coin that is). Made the trade and still have the wonderful coin!

Whether it's to help a traveler or to swap for unactivated cons, your own cache is fair game! Just remember to trade fairly as was likely the intention of the person dropping the coin off (unless it's a traveler of course).

I just did that when I recently placed 2 coins and 2 TBs in one of my caches to get them all moving. I know I will be going North this weekend and may get to hit a cache or two so I plan to place it there is possible.

The point of a travel bug is to travel. If you can help a traveler along by retrieving it from your own cache (or someone else's cache that you've already found), then go for it. Just remember to log it out of the cache on-line so people won't look for it in the cache.

The only people who might complain about this practice are those who aggressively collect custom coin icons (usually newer players, but not always). They might accuse you of "cheating" because since you already knew where the cache was you "could get there quicker than they could".

My policy is that I don't take a coin from my own cache unless I'm asked to do so by the coin owner. That has only happened once and the coin was in there for some time. I don't go to caches I have previously visited to claim a coin either. If I go caching I will try for caches with coins in there before other caches that are in the area.
