What is the weather generally like at that time of year. It is still shorts and tshirts here, so unsure how to pack.

 

It typically gets chilly at night and usually shorts are not worn much after labor day. I plan on packing layers (long sleeve shirts and sweatshirts) along with a lightweight coat.

I wear shorts well into October. usually just throw a sweatshirt on at night. I like the chill.

Tsun, I used to love your designs and HAD hoped to meet you. Since you won't be attending the event, I guess it will have to be the next GW.

I'd be angry all the time if my football team and hockey team choked all the time too. Don't be a hater :D pgh loves me too much to kick me out of the festivities :D

 

I hope everyone will still be up by the time I get in on Saturday night. Will someone line the driving route with balloons so I know where to go :D Seriously though, how long time wise, will it take me to drive from P'burgh airport to the hotel?

How about a trail of coins instead of balloons? :D It will probably take you around 30 minutes to get from the airport to the hotel, depending on the traffic/contruction situation. If is all highway driving...so it's not too bad of a drive.

We have some special directions for you from the airport to the hotel, just make sure you have a full tank of gas in your rental car! :D

We will line the driving route with geocoins using them as reflectors. :D Seriously, most of the driving directions from the airport to hotel will tell you 45 minutes, but in reality you are looking at 30 minutes, all highway driving. (taxi drivers say 30 minutes drive time)

I am actually thinkin about packin up the tent and camping out. Will have to see. Going to have to rent a car to get there first. I am not about to drive my V8 truck that far at these gas prices...lol

Had thought about haulin the camper, but again, it would not be worth it for a day of camping. Plus we already have all our camping trips planned out and reserved. No extra $$$$ to take the camper somewhere else.

If it helps money-wise, I went a cheaper route with accommodations.... I got a cabin for $50 a night at KOA.

 

Which one are you staying at? I prefer to go camping then stay in a hotel..

 

This one. It was listed on the event's website under the Travel tab. I have rented the small cabins at KOA before and was happy with it. Of course its bare bones, but who cares? We only need it to sleep!

Ironically I purchased a brand new tent shortly after booking the cabin. :D But I think I prefer the cabin after the long drive...who wants to set up a tent?

Well I called the reservation line, who told me that I needed to call the hotel specifically because we are arriving a day early. So I called the hotel got put on hold twice and then talked to the RUDEST PERSON EVER! :P She told me to call the reservation line because "That's what we have a reservation line for!" <_< I know Dressel Dragons mentioned the person who has the GCF info is on vacation til next week could someone in the GCF committee please PM me her name and I'll just wait until next week to make reservations instead of tommorrow.

Seriously thinkin about coming down Saturday night...just tryin to figure out if I can afford a place to stay or if I am going to have to sleep in the car....lol. Would not be the first time I have done it...dont think it will ever be the last.

Personally I doubt I will have a single coin on me at this event. I am going to have some fun and talk rather than trade. Thats what all day Sunday is for. I am sure there will be binders out, but for me I am more interested in meeting as many people as I can.

 

Word has it, Phil Trigo who is hosting the event and is President of TRIGO which is the local geocaching group of Pittsburgh, will be there to have some drinks. You won't want to miss meeting him as he tells some of the best stories. Quite a few of us will be headed up to the casino next door later in the evening to try some one armed bandit luck. On second thought I might have to bring my lucky coin for this.

If you have not registered for GCF yet, your time is running out. We will be shutting down the online registration on the GCF website on 8/24. You can still attend the event if you have not registered, but the only way to guarantee that you will receive the swag bag and event coin and shirt is to register on the GCF website…www.gcfpittsburgh.com. We have many people that have registered to use the website, but have not reserved their registration package. If you do not have a receipt for your package on your registration page, then you have not reserved an event package.

 

Don’t forget to keep your eye on the GCF forums and the event page for the latest announcements. As usual, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the GCF Committee through the GCF website.

It is really looking bad for me to make this event, no matter how much planning and saving I do, something happens.

 

I cache as a team known as Team Rod & Tod w/KAboom, The Cachestalkers. Tod was killed riding his motorcycle while on his way to work yesterday, Tod was planning to make the trip with me. Tod and I were best of friends since our younger years, we were like brothers. We did much of everything together, be it caching or mountain climbing.

 

Without Tod, I don't know if I have the strength and bravery to make the trip, we had planned to ride the bikes out. I know I cannot afford a plane ticket or even gas for my Jeep, so it's just not looking good. I have made long trips on my bike, but always with a safety net (Tod) beside me or nearby enough to be able to come to my aide. Just not sure I'd feel comfortable making the trip alone, will have to wait and see how it goes.

Oh no! I am so sorry, for you, and for Tod's family. I am not sure what happens after we leave this world, but I am sure your friend is riding and caching in a better place.

Of course it is too soon, and only time will tell, but I hope you will be able to make it. It sounds like the kind of thing he would have wanted you to do, for him. Time will tell.

I'll keep you and your families in my thoughts and prayers.

With the exception of 2 of the 10, a couple will be ebayed for GCF to help them raise funds and a couple will be used for the auction/raffle/whatever, and a few left in a secret locations for lucky finders :) I may leave one in a cache if I have time to go out and get one while I'm there :huh: The 10 made are nontrackable and the back engraving letters show: GCF 08 'YINZ' Suppose to be here next week some time :)

Reminder...We will be shutting down the online registration on the GCF website today, 8/24, at midnight. You can still attend the event if you have not registered, but the only way to receive the swag bag and attendee event coin is to register on the GCF website…www.gcfpittsburgh.com. All registration packages must be paid by midnight, 8/24. The GCF store will remain open for an additional week, and will include the RE event coin. Remember...the only way to guarantee that you will obtain an event coin is to order it now. We will have a very limited amount of the RE version available at the event...when they are gone, they are gone.

You must be logged into the website to view the store. Remember...the only way to guarantee that you will obtain an event coin is to order it now. We will have a very limited amount of the RE version available at the event...when they are gone, they are gone.

Well, it's official, I cannot make the event. :rolleyes::(;)

 

My Jeep is in need of brakes, no food in the cupboards, KAboom is gripey because I wanted to make the trip leaving him behind etc etc....it wasn't meant to be. I am so sad about this as I really really wanted to go!

 

I have paid for an event coin (and cannot find the confirmation email...go figure) and would also really like to get one of those event YIMES! Anyone going care to help me out?? I'd truly be appreciative if someone could at least grab me a YIME as I think I'm out of luck on the event coin (no way to prove my purchase)!!!

 

I know, short notice and it's just my tough luck....hoping someone will take pity on me! Have fun everyone.

It is should not be hard...just print your registration page...it includes the date that you paid for your stuff. You should also be able to obtain your paypal receipt pretty easiliy, if, for some reason, printing your registration page does not work. Just make sure that you get a hard copy of this info to whoever is picking up your stuff...they will need it to do so.
