Mackinac Island Caches?

There are a lot of caches on the island. You may think that you could hit them all in a day or so but you would be sadly mistaken. The terrain is tough and the no car thing really makes it a physical workout on the bikes.

There is an annual geocaching event held every spring ont he island by the Cyclops family. They place a lot of caches, and in particular earthcaches.

Many find having a plan works best on the island. When we were there a couple of years ago we split the island into parts.

1. The outside.

There is a road that circles the island. It is down low right along the waters edge. Many caches here. We went counter clock wise because that is how the multis were laid out at the time. Not sure about now.

There is a cliff that you must climb to access the rest of the island for most of the way from this road. We left many of the nearby inland caches to hit all at the same time from the top so we wouldn't have to repeatedly climb up and down the staircases and trail.

2. Downtown.

Downtown is where you get off the ferries. Good concentration of caches here along with most of the hotels and resturants and historical sites.

3. Inland.

The caches here are more spread out but still most are not rated to high in terrain. It's the bicyle riding that kills you. Your legs will feel it the next morning.

My advice is just take your time and enjoy. Also, the weather can be quite unpredictable on the island. You are surrounded by the cool waters of the great lakes which seem to generate a cool breeze even in the hot part of the summer. It may be very cool in the morning and turn very warm in the afternoon.

Great history here. Great fudge and taffy too. Watch where you walk when you're on the road, those road apples will be plentiful.

Have fun!

Looks like there are lots. The zip code is 49757.

Our daughter went there a couple of years ago--she said it was wonderful. She brought us back goodies--fudge from Macinac Fudge Shop, a nice sample of Petoskey stone, and beautiful jewelry for me. She assured us we would love it there, too.

wow! There certainly wasn't that many when we went there a few years ago. We bagged all the caches in one day save one which we later learned was MIA.

Your organized plan is really helpful. Do you think a two day approach would work, taking the outside and ferry landing one day, then hitting the top the next?

I think if you try and do all the caches in two days you will be not enjoying the sites of the island you will be passing. This isn't a place for power caching.

That being said, you may be able to do all the outside of the island/ferry landing ones in one day. But the interior ones will be tough in one day. You may be able to do it but you will be beat.

Remember you will be riding a bicycle or horse to reach all caches. And the island is not flat.

Have fun,

Thanks. We're traveling with friends, so plans need to mesh, but fortunately for us, we've done many of the attractions the island offers in a past visit. We spent an entire day at the fort last time, since we re-enact that era, too. Thanks for your tips. We're looking forward to doing whatever we can! We do a lot of rugged terrain where we live in the course of a normal day's caching, so we'll see if we're up to the island!

Thanks again.
