The manner in which the map data is stored. Your unit has to be able to support the NT version in order for the map to work. You can check the Garmin site for the compatibility with your unit.

However, searches seem to be slower with NT. Since a 2gig memory card will hold the entire U.S. with room to spare, and can be had for just $10, you can get everything you need and have faster performance by using the non-NT version.
