TeamEcuador
Are there any maps of Europe (Germany, England, France) that can be had for low or no cost? We are taking a vacation there this summer and I can't justify $150 for the Garmin maps for just one week. This would be for my Legend HCx. Any insights appreciated. Quote Link to comment

Check http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com or for a little more work but possibly better results, http://www.openstreetmap.org (go to the Wiki and look for a project called mkgmap). Quote Link to comment
MtnHermit
Any insights appreciated. Given the technical challenge or renting maps for one week, consider renting a Tom-Tom or Nuvi road warrior GPS for a week. May come with the rental car, if you're doing that. Quote Link to comment

I have the choice of downloading either a source file or a binary file. I tried source but the site hung up and nothing came down. What do I do with the file after I have it? The second site (openstreetmap) was down this evening. Quote Link to comment
Motorcycle_Mama
You could look at purchasing the maps on microSD card and then selling them when you got back. Since the maps are locked to the card, another user would be able to use them when you were finished with them. Quote Link to comment
cwguinther
Ok, this might seem like a really stupid question to some, and I am sure if I searched long enough on this site I would be able to answer my own question. Unfortuately I am extremely limited as to internet bandwidth (on a thuraya plugged into my laptop) therefore can not spend the time required to research it. Now for the question. I am planning on traveling to Europe in the next week. If I purchase a copy of city navigator 2008 NT preloaded on the micro SDcard, all i have to do is install the card into my 60csx and I'll have access to all the maps, right? I am not going thru all the trouble of taking a laptop and will not be able to register, unlock or any of the other things I might need to do involving modern technology. Any assistance or advise that can be provided will be greatly appreciated. CWG Quote Link to comment
+Crid
Check http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com or for a little more work but possibly better results, http://www.openstreetmap.org (go to the Wiki and look for a project called mkgmap). I'd also recommend OpenStreetMap. The site is down at the moment because of a hardware problem (which they're undoubtedly working on right now). I had a trip to Toronto a few weeks ago and discovered that Toronto was really well mapped on OSM, so I grabbed the map data for that area and used mkgmap to create a map file for my 76CSx. I regularly get the extract of UK data and build maps for my Garmin because a lot of footpaths, bridleways, etc are mapped (very useful for geocaching). The downside is the maps aren't routeable. But I have City Navigator on an SD card for that. Edited June 20, 2008 by Crid Quote Link to comment

I found a friend that had MetroGuide Europe for Garmin that I borrowed. It is not locked to a unique GPS and was ideal to make sure I wasn't lost. I wasn't driving so don't know if the navigation works or not but all the street detail is there. Quote Link to comment

Just be aware that the maps preloaded on SD (or microSD) cards can't be used on or with a computer (ie MapSource) and you can't put anything else on the card. Quote Link to comment
