martlakes
Hi I wondered if anyone had tried an iPhone for caching. I presume if you can use Safari to browse the web you should be able to get cache details on the move? I also watched the World Wide Developers Conference key note speech by Steve Jobs yesterday, introducing the new 3G phones. Sounds like with the 2.0 software update and the Apps store that there's a lot of potential for using an iphone, especially as it now has GPS built in and uses 3G and is loads cheaper!! A custom built App for the geocaching on the iPhone looks quite possible. Any tech folk out there with any thoughts on this? Quote Link to comment
Bambography
There is already a discussion on this going on in the main GPS/Tech forum (here). It sounds like Tom Tom already have software working on the iPhone so i'm sure with the GPS built-in its fairly certain that it will be available in the Apple App store when it launches. As for a caching app, that would require someone who is a) into caching and have the drive to get something decent written. However with the right knowhow, a GSAK for iPhone is entirely possible - Wouldn't that be great! Download the database, run your queries etc, click the cache, and go get it! Quote Link to comment
martlakes
Thanks for pointing me at that thread, hadn't known about that forum. The software developers kit looked very easy to use so I'm sure someone will put an app together to work easily with geocaching. (The presentation made it look easy enough for me to have a go and I know very little about programming!! - but I'm sure it isn't really like that.) In the thread, several current alternatives were mentioned that already do what the iphone might/should, but I wonder why they aren't well known or widely used. I suspect that the usual Apple magic will apply ie. making things easy to use and a fully integrated experience like they did with itunes. I think I'd still want a normal GPS, which I suspect would be more accurate and certainly more rugged / reliable than a phone. Hopefully the price plans won't be killers as this looks very interesting. Have to keep an eye on it but I might have to start saving my pennies! Surely the future is going to be all about personal hand held 'computers' and someone is going to produce a brilliant device with a mix of functions that really hits the spot. Maybe Apple are getting there. Quote Link to comment
DutchGeek & Lollypops
And Unlimited data plans are not cheap either. Plus, if outside coverage, you need to have some way of storing maps on the unit, which sort of defeats the purpose of downloading maps from Googlemaps as you need them. Quote Link to comment
PopUpPirate
But is it as good as http://www.geocachenavigator.com/NokiaEdit...25/Default.aspx Quote Link to comment
