bexhet Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 A friend of mine recently introduced me into the world of Geocaching, and it has ignited my veins like wildfire. Never have I ever been so enthralled with any sort of hobby or activity. Unfortunately, I can only go so far without a GPS, but at the same time I'm on a really limited budget. I'm just looking for a beginner GPS, nothing fancy. Heck, I don't even need a GUI. As long as I could find a little hand held box telling me where I am going in terms of "hot" or "cold"--that would make me happy! If there is anyone out there willing to part with a used GPS in the area of $50, please, I would appreciate it a lot. Quote

While I don't have a hot deal for you, I wanted to encourage you that they are there to be found. I bought an etrex on Craigslit for $40. I used it for a couple of days and figured I had made a mistake. I was going to sell it the same way I bought it. But I didn't. I kept using it. I have found over forty caches, and I have grown to love my "Little Yellow Cell Phone." I even found a cable online - but I haven't perfected the download technique yet. Mine is an older model which came with a serial cable, and I think I have to download and install something to get the computer to use USB as it would a serial port. I think. In the meantime I happily load the coords by hand and go off and find caches. So - keep looking - you'll find something which will work. Quote
+brodee Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 If you have a laptop I have a USB GPSr I would send you very cheap. I also have a small bluetooth receiver that can be used with a laptop, Palm, or pocketPC. I used it with my smartphone until they upgraded it with built in gps. Quote
+maurycy Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Check your local Craigslist. You can get older receivers for $25. The sensitivity and startup times are not going to be great, but they will get to near the cache. Quote
+maldar Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Keep checking back. You can find a Garmin Etrex Ledgend here for around that much and I think it is the best starter GPS. Believed I just saw one listed for about $65. Quote

It's "plain vanilla" compared to today's technology, but for a bare-bones starter unit it's fine. If interested EMail me via the geocaching site and we'll chat. Quote
