What is your cache density

Recommended Posts

Based on several recent threads asking about distance to the nearest unfound cache, exceeding the 500 cache limit on searches, etc I wondered how different areas compared in terms of cache density.

Go to the "Hide and Seek a Cache" page, Enter in your address in the first box, then select the radius to 5 miles

and do the search. Note the number then do the same for 10, 25, and 50 miles. Here is what I get for Ithaca, NY.

5 miles: 105

10 miles: 155

25 miles: 534

50 miles: 1891

5 Miles:191

10 miles:355

25 miles: 746

50 miles: 1821

Well for my very lovely area of far Western Pa from the very megaloplis of Sharon Pa

1 mile = 11

5 miles = 99

10 miles = 187

25 miles = 716

50 miles = 2253

I hope this helps you.

Have fun and stay safe. (or right now in N.E. USA stay COOL)

5 miles = 33 (8 of them ours)

10 miles = 123

25 miles = 1103

50 miles = 4879 (at 50 miles you hit Boston MA, Providence RI & Hartford CT)

Just for fun, 1 mile = 2 caches. One of them ours.

Here's some other fun stats. Cached for 5+ YEARS at home in MA to get to 500 finds & 1 FTF. Just returned from GeoWoodstock 2 WEEK trip in CA, where we found almost 200 caches & 2 FTFs. It was mostly sight-seeing / history with caching thrown in but due to density, you can see a huge difference in the numbers.

Guess I should have more than just 112 finds, eh? :)

Edit: Just above me, wandering4cache, we found your Grizzly Adams cache in Charlton today. TFTC! :)

That was my motivation for starting the thread. There have been lots of "stats" threads about number of finds in a day, number of consecutive days with a find, total number of caches found, etc. One can't really compare these without knowing what the cache density is for those sharing their numbers.

To add the number that others have provided, I have 28 caches within 1 mile.

I have found all but 2 caches within the 10 mile radius, thus almost all my searching is done between 10-25 miles from home. The town I live in has a population of about 30,000 and there is one other slightly smaller town about 20 miles away, and the next larger town is 45 miles away, so most of the caches in the range that I spend my time searching are in rural and forested areas.

Like Curmudgeonly Gal, if I travel an hour away I'll be in an much more cache dense area where there are 380 caches within 10 miles. So if I want to have a big numbers day I would have to drive an hour away

before seeking my first cache.

25 miles - 480

50 miles - 2,560

I live near OzGuff so several hundred of those nearby caches are his. I only have a handful unfound less than 15 miles (one of which, my closest unfound, is the final "bonus" in a series of OzGuff's that requires a 200 mile roundtrip through 10 counties to complete - it's been mocking me for two years. :o )

I know what you mean. One of my caching goals is to clear out all of the nearest caches, and a few weeks ago I had found every cache within 10 miles. A couple of days later there were 3 new puzzle caches, two rated 4 stars and one rated five stars placed within that radius. I've since found those but a couple of weeks ago there was a cache posted 1.7 miles from home that is currently rated a 4 for difficulty. It's had 11 DNFs so far and no finds. It's on an old steam train, and the listing has the cache size as "unknown". The person that placed it has only one find (4 years ago) and no other hides. We've all seen the guideline about finding some amount of caches (50 or so seems to be the recommendation) and this cache might be one of the reasons for the recommendation.

With only 1 find, the chance that the placement guidelines might not have been followed is greater than if it had been placed by a seasoned cacher. It could be buried under the train, require special tools to disassemble part of the train to get the cache, have soft coordinates, or something else that a beginner might think would make for a good hide, but isn't something a seasoned cacher might look for.

I would have to cross into Canada and travel almost 2 1/2 hours to find a "cache dense" area, or 4 hours to Minneapolis. I think numbers do say something about the amount of experience a cacher has, but only when taking in the context of their cache environment and their logging methods.

In other words, if they're not your numbers or the numbers of a close caching friend, they are meaningless.

It was interesting to me to compare with these numbers and see what happens when you run into an ocean, a few large mountain ranges and the frozen Canadian north.

I will obviously need to move to Chicago if I ever want to have a chance at any real numbers.

From a small obscure town somewhere in New Zealand - that we happen to live in ! :D

1 mile 42/10 ours

5 miles 81/16 ours

10 miles 95/18 ours

25 miles 165

50 miles 227

We have the ocean about a mile away on one side and a serious mountain range on the other side, that begins within the 50 mile area. So fairly slim pickings compared to most of you in the USA.
