+bigmouth
Have you ever looked for a cache that seemed to be located on a tree. And you went crazy pulling every loose piece of bark off of it. Leaving bark chips strewn all around it's base. Poor trees. What must they feel, being stripped of their protection from the elements. Maybe we are urban Bears looking to satisfy our need to locate a cache. We are just compelled to do it. We can't stop. Just like the Bear that's leaving it's mark or looking for food. Peace! Question? Is it right to debark a tree? Quote Link to comment
cowcreekgeeks
Nevermind I changed my mind. NO WAY! By the way...bears act on instinct. I doubt you're debarking a tree to sharpen claws or search for grubs. Use common sense. Every GPSr has a +/- error so maybe the cache is hidden somewhere else. The guidelines dictate that you can't use anything "pointy" to hide a cache so why in the world would anyone (you) strip a tree of it's bark to find a cache? Neos2
I have never felt the urge (or need) to tear the bark off a living tree to search for a geocache --or indeed for any other reason. I have had reason to have to debark cut trees before-- It was extremely hard to remove the bark, but it had to be done--We were building life-size models of wigwams and that native American group always debarked their frame. Are you guys sure you aren't seeing fungus problems or insect infestations? Why would anyone take the bark off a tree for a cache? Quote Link to comment

ao318
I have searched trees before. I have stuck my fingers in the knot holes and have gently run my fingers along the bark but I have never had the urge to pull the bark off. If I can't find it by just feeling around I move on, it's not that important for me to find every cache. Quote Link to comment

Luckless
I took my sister's stupid dog with me caching. The cache was supposed to be located in a tree (but the cache had new coordinates and I didn't know that at the time) so I carefuly pulled back some loose bark at the base of the tree , being careful not to hurt the tree, to see if the cache was there. Stupid dog thought that pulling on bark looked like fun and grabbed and ripped the bark to shreds and proceeded tearing away at the bark. Always felt a little bad about that. Quote Link to comment

+briansnat
First they came for the oaks and I did not speak out because I was not an oak.
