+SteveOr
I'm headed to Afghanistan this summer and want to have usable maps in my Garmin 60C. This site sells what I'm looking for but at the princely sum of $250. On top of that I can only load it into one computer and it has to have internet access in order to register it (not sure I'd have that where I'm headed). I'd like to know if it is possible to make my own maps of Afghanistan with publicly available data. Thanks Quote Link to comment
+Redwoods Mtn Biker
Here are some free maps. You can make your own using SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data, but don't expect 40' contours. Quote Link to comment
SiliconFiend
Don't forget Mapcenter 2. Quote Link to comment
+SteveOr
I downloaded the first Afghanistan map from this Mapcenter2 page, downloaded the "source" file and installed in Mapsource using MapSetToolKit. But when I zoom in closer than 75 miles Mapsource shuts down. All my other maps work (Garmin and custom) with no problem. I did a registry check with MapSetToolKit and it shows everything is ok. How can I fix it? Also why would I download the "binary" file for this mapset? Quote Link to comment

That would be the reason to download the binary version (so you don't need to compile it). What error is Mapsource giving you? Haven't fiddled too much with MapSetToolkit, so not sure where the mistake is, but more details might trigger someone to recognize your problem. Quote Link to comment
-Oz-
I created an installer for you: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/20/ Just download that and it should install it. I tested and I was able to zoom in with it. Quote Link to comment

I think a map with more detail would be nicer but since I haven't been to Afghanistan and may never get there there is no way for me to know. Quote Link to comment

Actually it's not bad, will definately be better than the basemap. Thanks for posting it. Quote Link to comment
+Bzzliteyr
Oz, get in touch, I have been there and can tell you what to expect and what maps work..I used the mapcenter maps the whole time over and even loaded them on my buddies' GPSrs... great road detail in the Southern areas. Quote Link to comment
+themeecer
I assume you are in the military. First off .. thank you very much. Secondly, are you planning on geocaching there or simply want to use it for hiking and knowing your terrain. I have read of some of the geocaching going on in Iraq in amazement. Does every cache there get a 5/5. Quote Link to comment
+she_wolf
I am going to preface this by saying I am a newbie.... but have really gotten into GC. We just found out that my brother is being called up and heading to Afghanistan, and since this thread came up on the search, figure I would try posting here. He is also new to GC.... Wondering if I can send a coin with him, or what can he actually do over there as far as GC.... Thanks! Quote Link to comment
