Talk about coals to Newcastle

That's an English expression, explained here:-

Newcastle on Tyne in England was a well known coal mining area and the UK's first coal exporting port. Taking coal there was an archetypally pointless activity. Other countries have similar phrases; in German it's 'taking owls to Athens' (the inhabitants of Athens already having sufficient wisdom). 'Selling snow to Eskimos', which in many people's understanding is also the same, has a different connotation. That refers to something which is difficult to achieve - requiring of superb sales skills.

Despite the name of the city, Newcastle's castle keep is almost a thousand years old - having replaced an earlier castle in 1178. The association of the city with coal and the phrase itself are also old. In 1606, Thomas Heywood in 'If you know not me, you know no bodie: or, the troubles of Queene Elizabeth' wrote:

"As common as coales from Newcastle."

The explicit link with pointlessness came soon afterwards, in Thomas Fuller's The history of the worthies of England, 1661:

"To carry Coals to Newcastle, that is to do what was done before; or to busy one's self in a needless imployment."

However - respect to the mission - it was fun to do the research and the shopping, so I'm not saying it is pointless at all - the expression just came to mind as I was packaging everything up - and thought I would post an explanation for the saying.

I am so glad to see that others are still working on their mission also. I am waiting for things to arrive in the mail and, frankly, for a weird miracle to happen. Hopefully I will be able to package everything up with the next week and get it in the mail !

My grodans mission is put together, I found alot of goodies to relate with. Now I just have to get my lazy body to the shop and buy a bigger green bag to send, it wouldn´t fit in the one I got from the beginning :D

For fiabus mission I still want to find some more/better things but I´m working on it and have some ideas so please be patient.

I hear ya! This has been a tough one to come up with ideas. Just trying to finalize my goodies to mail. The geocoin was the easiest part of this one LOL.

I went to 10 stores looking for one particular item to include in the package we're sending out, but it's the wrong time of year so I finally had to get really creative to locate that item. I echo earlier comments - this has been a tough one. I used google, Wikipedia and even signed out a NZ guidebook from the library in order to research this one. Anyhow, the package is finally put together and will be in the mail tomorrow. Hope the sled dogs are ready to mush!!

3. Mission sent - check - FINALLY this morning - all the way to South Australia. It was hard to find something we liked that had anything to do with S. Australia. Finally got the decent idea through this forum to go EBay route and had to wait for the ordered product. I wish I could of done better, but I didn't want my mission person to have to wait any longer!

WOW, Horn Hunters, sounds like you might have sent a package our way. I think we are the only South Aussie's playing in this mission. We were trying to connect our place to where we were sending, it was a lot harder than we thought, which is why we did a joint one this time and not 1 each  With Gayle having a broken foot, it certainly was a lot harder. So hopefully our parcel arrives in Florida, and makes some sence, but probably won't  it was fun any way, and in a way we learned a little bit more about a place we knew nothing about!!

ps we also made episode 30 of the geotalk pod cast this week too

cheers from the Flipper's

You are correct. When you get your package I bet you'll have a good laugh because, while I've never been anywhere near Australia or even your hemisphere, I bet the item we sent you is available in every little dorky tourist shop in Australia. But hey! Its not a kangaroo, we at least tried! I really wanted to go with a wombat theme, but the best I could find were plush wombats and those suckers are $ especially when all the ones I could find on ebay were being shipped from Australia! I really liked those wombats. I debated having something shipped straight to you (if it was coming from there anyway) but darn I wanted to see it! What would be the point of learning something about the outback if I couldn't even see the item I'm sending?!? Anyway, what I lacked in Aussie content, I tried to make up for in geocoinage.

I also took the liberty of sending you an extra coin with a little note asking if you could release it to the wild for me. At your complete leisure of course. No rush. Hope you don't mind. Wait for the foot to mend! Hope it heals soon.

OH MY GOODNESS!

Six Little Spookies went overboard on my package! I was speechless!!! But only for a bit :D:D

Wow! The postage cost almost $28 :DB):D

There was almost one kilo (about 2 pounds) of chocolate in there! :D:D:D:D:D

I am in awe of the work that went into this package! Absolutely amazing is what you are Steve!

* We got M&M's (two HUGE bags of peanut M&M's YUM!) and a block of Cadbury chocolate because we have a Cadbury Factory here. :D

* Pirate stuff - dubloons and other assorted treasure in a pirate cup because of our piratey/convicty heritage :D

* A Race car which Piglet immediately filched as we have a yearly event here called Targa Tasmania B)

* A cute stuffed Penguin which Piglet also immediately nabbed and tucked under his arm as we are attempting to be known as the International Gateway to the Antarctic :D

* Coinage - a Six Little Spookies sig item - an Australian Penny! :D

- two pins from Oakcoins :D

- Caching in a Winter Wonderland Snow Globe coin - very appropriate! I love it! :D

And a great letter explaining the significance of everything. Thankyou thankyou thankyou!!!!!!!!!

What a fantastic, wonderful surprise! :D

As promised here is a photo of my reverse souvenir mission that I received. I can't say thanks enough!! Pincourt is a little city west of the island of Montreal which is pretty hard to research. So bluemotmot got very creative and researched my last name (husband's last name :D ). Which is pretty funny because there are not a lot of Bechervaise's out there and one is related to PengoDaddy, distant cousin, named John Bechervaise. He was a famous explorer of Antarctica. He lived in Australia. bluemotmot discovered an island named after him and sent us penguin related stuff!! :):D Although our caching name is not based on him, I guess a love of penguins runs in the genes. LOL :D

We received a set of nesting penguins. I LOVE them!! I have never been able to find a set of penguins and we have a store in the local mall that sells the babushka dolls. They have so many different kinds, but never any penguins. I check every time we go. Plus we received a great story Mr. Popper's penguins. I will be reading that to Beky this week. :D Plus I received some awesome geocoins; GW6 Beaver Dude (such a cute coin!!), a set of Dorkfish tropical fish geocoins (WOW!) and a bluemotmot big bean!! My first big bean.

Thanks so much bluemotmot!! You really went above and beyond!!

The packaging was beautiful, from the individualy wrapped presents to the casino themed confetti! It even had Lucy the Elephant! Very, very cool!!!! Thank you so much! Your research was fantastic! You find out a lot of information from so far away!

On my end, I am still waiting for the coin I ordered. But it should be here soon! Checking the mai lfor it now!

I received my mission from Tooey today - awesome job researching Chico, CA. You may notice the nuts are not in the photo - I ate them!!!

Anyways, Chico is known for growing nuts - walnuts almonds etc - and our local geocaching group is NUTS, Northstate Unusual Treasure Seekers....and every year there is a huge yo-yo competition. A local store has the world's largest yo-yo - and no, it isn't me.....

And, thanks for the great coins, neither of which I had!!!

Thank you Mrs. B. from Mrs. B.

This is also my first mission GEO* has been studying about the area and say's you have some neat runestones in Cornwall.

Probably go with that castle.

I will keep the golf course :) for a great surprise here it is great.

Yes Roaring River is the best trout fishing in the whole area and the flies will be used there for sure.

How did you know GEO* needed new shoe strings?

Those came in handy as well.

We both love the Cornwall Geocoin it is awesome.

You did a great job thank you for joining the mission.

A big thankyou to the Horn Hunters, our package arrived in OZ today, hmm... something we never had before, being from oz, we just never took to needing a Boomerang :D but it's great. The coins were extra cool as well, we'll have to hide the Guitar as a friend keeps eying off one we got in our other mission, I have fooled him by putting it in a mounting frame with a number of other coins to display them, I think this new one will go in the next display I make up. The coin of yours will start it's Aussie rocking journey on the weekend :D Again thanks, it was a fun mission to play, although I don't think we did too good, the broken foot got in the way.

cheers
