Which Garmin GPS can do area calculations?

A friend of mine wants a GPS that can do area calculations. I know the explorist600 I have can do it but was wondering if the Garmin handhelds can? If so which models?

I think most if not all of the current models can. The 60csx, 76csx and Colorados can for sure, I'm not 100% sure about the eTrex. This information is available on the Garmin page, select model and look on the Spec page.

My Venture Cx does, My eTrex Legend HCx does, Colorado 300 does......

When I look at the track info on my Legend HCx it gives an area calculation. But my question is, what exactly is that measuring? The track is not an enclosed area.

The algorithm used closes the area by drawing a straight imaginary line from the last track point back to the first one.

The same goes for when you use the area measuring function. If you don't go back to where you started, it will just assume the straight way back to that point.

 

It may also be worth noting that if you make a figure like an 8, then the second loop will be counted negative. If both loops are identical, you end up with zero.
