paganfrog
well im soon to be getting a gps for my birthday and as it looks a bit cheaper priced as well as having accumilated amazon gift voucher credits, i will be buying a garmin etrex from amazon-uk the bit im stuck on is which one to go for. im an absolute beginner to geocaching and gps systems. and as we already have a satnav for the car, this gps will be my gadget purely for geocaching. the 2 etrex models are garmin etrex gps personal navigator or garmin etrex H handheld gps navigator which one would you recommend to me to go for? Either the H or go for a gecko 201 (I am biased) get a cable to download waypoints and rechargeable batteries and you are fit to go (Well if not fit - Ready!!!) Bob Dont know how close you are to a good outdoor or maplin type store but I found it useful to see these things prior to purchase Quote Link to comment
+HazelS
ALWAYS get an H over anything else... The H denotes that it has the new chipset, and is therefore more accurate under tree cover. If you can stretch to it, Id go for a Etrex legend H, you get the cable with it too - so no extra expense that you'd have with a yellow etrex. Quote Link to comment

Bob Dont know how close you are to a good outdoor or maplin type store but I found it useful to see these things prior to purchase its pretty much a one road in and out of the area where i live. im out in the sticks and any equipment (large household stuff, or specialist gadgets) tends to be priced expensive because the local businesses know they have us by the short and curlies. we (me and him) tend to ignore local shops because of that. we dont have any national stores except tescos which is only 2 years old here. +Delta68
Our original Etrex (not a H) was excellent. When the rubber surround went all saggy, Garmin replaced it with a new one which is AN ABSOLUTE PILE OF JUNK! It is always at least 40-80ft out and Garmin just said 'Tough!' Yes I am pretty bitter about it Quote Link to comment
+rutson
Hmmm... if a measuring device of whatever type is "always out" then it can generally be adjusted. Inaccuracy produces random indeterminate errors. Sounds more like a datum error or similar. Quote Link to comment

Have you made sure the 'Position Format' and 'Map Datum' selections agree? To quote from the Scouts Factsheet, (because I put it in there) "It is particularly important to ensure that whatever Units are being displayed as the Position Format have the correct Map Datum set. British Grid being displayed will need to have the datum set to OSGB and a Deg/Min display should have WGS84. Making a mistake in this could put your location out by up to a mile." At a Leader training session I messed with the settings on the 4 eTrex we were using and then had all the groups go to the same coordinates. They ended up separated by varying amounts, the worst by about 300 ft. Quote Link to comment

Checked with an old etrex next to the new gps. Sure enough I had messed up some settings. That would have had me swearing out in the field. laughs. All sorted out now. Good post...And of course I will be smiling at the weekend providing it is not raining.. Quote Link to comment
