Garmin Nuvi - True Paperless Geocaching

Recommended Posts

Super happy now that I am truly paperless. The happiest I have been in a long time. :D Just one thing...how do I delete the 500 from my Nuvi, I want to refine what is in my GPS? :D

I believe it only happens (invalid file) on the Nuvi 350. There is probably some variable that isn't being initialized the first run of the macro. As a workaround, until the problem is resolved, you may want to run a subset just to set the variable. The advanced macro does not have this problem.

Guys I'm sorry about the 2 x run to get it to work, I really don't know what to say, I can't reproduce here.

When/if jjreds produces his macro to allow to run on the current filter set, there will be no advantages to using this macro any more - par the tutorial that was created for it.

Stay tuned for jjreds!!

I frequently have to run the process several times to upload a file to my nuvi 750

The error message I get is as follows:

"The file C:\Program Files\Garmin/Geocache TourGuide.gpx is invalid. Do you want to want to continue?"

(sic)

Pressing YES or NO in each case terminates the process.

The files are in the specified folder but do not upload to the device.

In the past it has worked after several attempts.

As of today, no matter how many tries, it is simply not working at all.

Maybe I solved it already. Is there a problem with symbols in cache names?

I found one such cache and renamed it in GSAK, and the file uploaded with no problem.

Thus ending 2 hours of hair-pulling frustration!!

Have recently started geocaching, and thought I would try using my 1 year old nuvi200W to help me find a cache using the coordinates function on the unit. First attempt I found it very time consuming to get onto the target, and I was beginning to think a "proper" GPS would be required. However went onto the Groundspeak forums for assistance, and found your webpage.

Went through the set up procedure and all downloaded perfectly, completed in about 1 hour.

Congratulations on a brilliant piece of software and for the very detailed set up instructions. :)

As you are urging others to do, I may gravitate to the more recent application now available in due course.

Couple of questions to assist,

Is the "off road / pedestrian" option more accurate to locate the target when in the "wild"?

Does the satellite information screen default always with north at the top of the screen?

Does the red dot "disappear" when right over the target, and if so, how close does that happen?

(Cont.) I am starting to figure this out and I love the macro. Now I just want to know how to stop the "Tour Guide" from showing up. I live in a famous place with at least of these 8 on my 20 minute commute alone. Any help?

Enjoy the hunt.

This is simply amazing! ;) I have been thinking about getting an expensive unit to do this because I have gone through so much paper. Having to pick a route and print out pages, then not be able to vary my route or lose all the info on the caches I might come across, ugh! :D This is just too cool!!! I don't know if the satellite page was always there or not, but I didn't know about it before. It really helps when unsure of the accuracy due to tree cover, etc, and getting logs like "I finally found it 40 feet from where you said it was" are disheartening. Now I can put down how many satellites were in view and the supposed accuracy at placement. Plus, I can simple do a screenshot when I place a cache and all the info, including coords are right there! ;) Knowing all the info about a cache; placed date, last four attempts (F/DNF), last found, TBs, DECRYPTED HINTS! Awesome! Thanks so much for doing this macro. SO appreciated! I got the info from one of the Northern California reviewers (Krypton) at Groundspeak who I talk to occasionally. He bought a Nuvi right after I did and gave me your link yesterday. There was some serious tweaking and some frustration getting it up and running but, MAN, was it worth while. Thanks again!

Perhaps you'd like to share with other new people what part of the procedure confused you.

That way we can help new people and we can update the tutorial if there are unclear parts.

Fantastic work!

I was in San Francisco recently and got a Nuvi 200W for $120 in West Marine. Just followed your tutorial and I'm mega-impressed. This just makes GeoCaching so easy.

Now to find the rest of those caches in Sausalito, and buy you a pint.

Have been following this for awhile and finally downloaded . . . great! It seems to work perfectly on my nuvi 760, however, it only seems to load 52 waypoints. My first set of waypoints totaled 356, but only 52 loaded on my nuvi. Any suggestions or help? Thanks.. I'm still searching for an answer

See previous posts about the 52 limit. The 356 are loaded into memory but the nuvi will only show the first 52 caches (the nearest 52) on screen (13 pages of 4 each). To prove it, just identify a cache that is NOT in the 52 and use the SPELL function to find it. It'll be there.

'Cache O' Plenty' . . . thanks for the very quick reply and it worked just like you said. Nice! I'm going to search previous posts now to see if the 52 'nearest' means nearest the nuvi location or nearest home coordinates? Again, thanks for the help.

Love the macro...I just can't get my found caches to stop loading. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Edit: I just filtered my unfound caches in GSAK before loading them, and it worked, but is there anyway this step can be eliminated?

Quick fix, before you run the cache, do a filter in GSAK for everything EXCEPT found caches.

Advanced fix: Move to jjreds macro

Another satisfied customer of the Macro. I am finding it amazing what the little Nuvi 200 is capable of.

So what else can it do, i imagine lots

Hi

Thanks for this nice macro.

I have used it my Nuvi and on Colorado (long before this was an option)

Can you pilotsnipes write on your homepage why we have to choose different GPS in FAQ.

I do not like to read trough 17 pages with 50 post on each to find the answer on some that would be nice to to know for all.

Tip:

Since Nüvi do not show Custom POI on the map, there is a way around this.

You can download GPSMapEdit for free here: http://www.geopainting.com/en/

Then you can use the GPX file with the POI and make a transparent map that you can put on top of City Navigator. (You should still keep the POI on the Nüvi, since it can contain much more info)

Couple of questions I could with an answer:

Is the "off road / pedestrian" option more accurate to locate the target when in the "wild"?

Does the satellite information screen default always with north at the top of the screen?

Does the red dot "disappear" when right over the target, and if so, how close does that happen?

be grateful if anyone could help me with these points,

thanks

Thank you! Your guide was simple to follow and the tutorial made it easy to use. We are relatively new to geocaching and this makes it so much easier. Less expensive too! Saving us on paper & ink costs!

3- Does the red dot "disappear" when right over the target, and if so, how close does that happen?

1 - It only stops the nuvi trying to "stick" to roads, if the cache is close to a road, the nuvi main map screen will try to keep the "car" icon the "road" rather than show you off in the grass/countryside.

2 - The sat screen is not a map, it is north orientated.

3- No read my website: http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/finding.html

Just a quick thank you to Pilotsnipes for all of his hard work on this. I followed the instructions and loaded 500 caches to my Nuvi 260. Everything seems to be in order on the unit, but I haven't been out driving with it yet.

I'm not worried about alerts as my Nuvi would be beeping nonstop (500 caches within a 6.5 mile radius of my home) and my wife thinks it's just an expensive toy anyway... no need to provide any additional fodder for her. If it does beep I'll probably shut them off.

Thanks again for giving me a paperless way to enjoy this hobby.

I'd also like to thank piolitsnipes for creating the macro as well as the excellent tutorial. I've been caching for some time now and for 3-4 years with an iQue 3600 and loved it until it finally died and Garmin no longer will fix them. I've written a few tutorials for friends using the iQue and cachemate and thought you had done an excellent job with yours. I recently bought a Nuvi 750 and followed the tutorial and was very happy with the results. Thanks again!! :)

Thanks for reply, and for brillant macro and set up & instructions- makes buying the Nuvi well worthwhile.

re: item 3 - on your instruction page the picture of the "updated sat screen" there is no "red dot" showing, hence my reason for the original question. I assume from your answer that the "red dot" will always be on show but in the direction last calculated by the software.

Hi Pilotsnipes great macro, I'm new to geocaching and I'm trying to get paperless. I got your macro working with a nuvi 205w, but When I run poiloader I get 2 errors. 1) windows cannot find C:\program Files\Garmin\Sox.exe make sure you typed correctly and then try again. 2) poiloader unable to convert C:\GSAK\Garminpoi/Geocache tourguide.wav to the proper format, therefore this file will not be transferred to your gps device. I click ok on both and then they go to the gps. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,

Have you accidentally installed 2 versions of POILOADER? You need to double check and make sure there's only one installed.

Also, you could try jjreds macro and see if that helps you. Just flick through the last 3 pages of this thread for more info.

I remember in some thread you said to download a newer version of the macro but now I can't find the link. Is that what the problem is?

Also: My new laptop is running Vista and I've had a lot of problems with some programs. Took me days just to get GSAK running. Does that have anything to do with it? Thanks for all the work you've put into this!

I got a Nuvi 300 at Christmas and enjoy the way it directs my route while driving. I entered the co-ord's to a cache, which was located close to a road and was basicly directed right to it! Wow, that opens up Geocaching to millions more :) Seems that if there are no roads, the Nuvi 300 won't find the cache? Was wondering if I can download Garmin Mapsource Topo and/or a Canadian topo map into the Nuvi - also will waypoints download from Mapsource Topo?

YES!!! Finally got it all working. One little detour... When I tried to run the macro, I got this error message: SQLite error 8: Attempt to run a readonly database.

So instead I saved the macro to the GSAK folder. At first I couldn't find it cuz it was in "other" instead of "installed macros" but it ran fine from "other" and then I figured that I could click "install" and get it on the list with the other macros I have.

BTW instead of a PQ of the nearest caches I PQ'd a bookmark list of a particular area nearby and that works just fine. Now I have to go find the bit about loading different databases but for now I am just giddy about getting it to work! Thanks again for all your hard work and your PATIENCE with illiterates like me who need things repeated over and over before we get it... ;)

I am a complete newbie and looking to buy my first unit. Is this just to use your Nuvi to drive to the cache or is the Nuvi used to find the caches once your on foot as well? I thought they weren't accurate enough to use once you were on site adn you needed a handheld unit.
