Garmin Nuvi - True Paperless Geocaching

Recommended Posts

There has been some talk in here as to why not and how to make caches show up on map. I'm not sure if answers have been posted but I noticed this weekend that they do show up on map. They are not cache icons like they do when loaded the normal way into Favorites. They are gray/black dots on map. Also I'm not sure if they show when map is in normal mode, tracking while driving. But if you tap screen and grab and scroll you will see them.

Delete POI and reload. See if that works. Loader maybe screwing it up.

Yes just to clarify, remove any poi.gpi file in your gamin \GARMIN\POI folder and try again.

Also re-read/follow the tutorial again very carefully, it really is as broken down as I can make it and if you follow it to the letter, you Nuvi will work.

Latest on a Nuvi 660:

Cache splash page works except for the Green Arrow (it still "beeps"). More option appears ONLY if the length of the assembled data (coordinates, type, found history, D/T, name, owner, placed date, last found date) exceeds the page capacity. Next page after more merely repeats the info on the splash page but now includes the truncated data that didn't fit on the splash page. There is no description, hints, logs, etc.

I think the green arrow you are referring to is at the top left of the screen. I think is was designed to play the corresponding mp3 file. This confused me for a bit and then I realized that Tours as imagined by Garmin were waypoints with an attached mp3 file and possible photo. The green arrow was meant to play the mp3 file for the tour. If that is not what you were referring to, then never mind.

Excellent. I finally found this back on page 3. I've been wondering what that dang green arrow was for. It was really annoying me but, if this explanation is correct, then I'll just stop worrying about it. Thanks.

I had to update Poiloader and then all work. Nice program.

Would it be possible to identify whether GSAK is using the "corrected coordinates?" As I solve puzzles and come up with new coordinates, I use the corrected coordinates field in GSAK. It is easy to see which puzzles I have solved this way.

Doesn't anyone else see the benefits of knowing the coordinates are actually corrected coordinates? How do you keep track of puzzle/mystery coordinates? The simplest method may be to just change the color of the coordinates if they have been corrected... or added a field CC:Y or CC:N. It is better than relying on memory whether you've solved the puzzle or not.

I did as above for 3 different databases. In Garmin\POI I named each file different. Now in Where To>My Locations>Custom POIs>, all three POI databases are there, but they are all named Geocache TourGuide. Is there a way for the name of the POI file to appear in the Custom POI menu on the Garmin ??? Thanks again for this excellent geocaching tool !!!

Look at this one built around pilotsnipes excellent macro http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=195389

It may have what you're looking for.

Thanks jjreds ... I have tried your macro a couple of times now (you have put a ton of work into that by the way), but it is really a lot more than I need. I am having great luck with pilotsnipes original. Is there anyway the orginal macro can show the different data base names on the nuvi? I dont mind renaming them in Garmin\POI, i just which the folder names would show up instead of "Geocache TourGuide"

i dont really know anything about programming and/or macros. is this where the file name is coming from ??

$SettingsFile=$_Install+"\macros\garmin-nuvi-exportgpx.dat"

$geofile = "Geocache TourGuide"

$geofilejpg = "futurefeature.jpg"

$maxlogs = 10

Pilot / JJ ... Is there anything we can do to tweak this to show the actual folder name on the nuvi ??

Thanks for your help, Kurt T.

I think this is your answer, yes. After you make your .gpx file with GSAK aka "Geocache TourGuide.gpx. Rename it to Whatever.gpx. When PIOLoader loads it onto your Nuvi it will show up as "Whatever." I have one named "Kansas Only", "Oklahoma Trip 2008", "Missouri."

Excellent. Thank you The Ravens. This worked perfect !! I am now in geocaching 7th heaven !!!

I just got a Garmin nuvi 260W, and love that I can use it for paperless caching, however, I can't seem to see more than 52 caches. Has anyone else had this problem or know what I'm doing wrong. Would love any help that is available, thanks!

Absolutely, but some of us us child waypoints. A solved puzzle and/or multi final for me will be labeled GX followed by the ending digits of the original GC code. A parking area I define will be GP, a trailhead GT, etc. Within a multi (again when I define them), I'll use G1, G2, G3, etc. I have personally found this to be a lot less confusing than corrected coords which may or may not have been entered by me.

:D This is the best ever! I have been looking and looking for a way to accomplish paperless caching without taking a laptop or 2 or 3 devices. Your tutorial helped me decide to buy a Gamin nuvi 350. It is great! I have loaded caches, gone caching, and logged my finds. I love it. The Garmin has taken me straight to the cache each time. I appreciate all your work on the macro and the directions. They were easy to follow and make loading POIs a snap.

When I log my finds and remove them from favorites, how do I get the finds to not load the next time I load caches from POI loader? Do I need to go back to GSAK and mark them as found on it also? I ended up removing all caches from my Garmin and then starting a new file in GSAK so that my found caches did not show on the Garmin.

Thanks for all the help!

Thanks for the great work making this macro.

Not sure if anyone else do this:

I use this macro to overcome the 2000 cache limit on Colorado series.

This way I can have both standard gpx files as cache (max 2000) and a GPI file listed inder custom POI with as many cache I like.

It does look like the new Colorado cache, and you can see description, logs and hints.

But you cannot mask as found..

But I have a small problem.

All Norwegian characters are gone like "Æ Ø Å" and "æ ø å"

This may also affect other language to.

The GPX/Zip file from Geochaing do include the characters.

If I copy the file to Colorado, all looks fine.

It looks also OK in GSAK, and the new gpx file.

So it has to be POILoader that removes the characters.....

In GSAK goto TOOLS -> OPTIONS

Bottom right is the box "Keep Characters"

Add all your characters here you want to keep.

Thanks for the input pilotsnipes, but it did not help.

Adding æøå and ÆØÅ to the option do not help with the name of the Cache.

Here is an example:

Name before convert:

GC10E08

Comments:

Mølleråsen by baltuz & KiG_, Traditional Cache (2/2.5)

So name should be "Mølleråsen"

Name after convert using Nüvi macro:

Mllersen/Tra/Y/GC10E08*

This should be:

Mølleråsen/Tra/Y/GC10E08*

Can you look at this?

You must first recalculate your smart names after this change (only have to do this once)

This rocks! I bought a nuvi 200w for traveling last week and I love it. We traveled about 500 miles this past weekend and turning on the proximity alert feature is great for finding caches along a route. Don't get me wrong, I still love my old Magellan Meridian Platinum for actually getting out and finding the cache, but it's great to have the the nuvi tell me when I'm approaching a roadside cache so I know when to stop :( . The screen on the Platinum was just too small to see well with it hanging from the windshield and I had to keep scanning for what was coming up instead of watching the road.

One change I made to the script was that I didn't like the default "ding" sound, so I made my own mp3 that says "geocache ahead" (I put it for download it here). I then converted to base 64 and pasted into the script in place of the original. If anyone would like to make your own alert voice, you can convert text to speech and save as as wav file for free at this web site. Again as so many other have said great job pilotsnipes!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU PILOTSNIPES!!!

I am not very savvy with computer programing stuff, but I was successful with your fantastic tutorial.

I bought the Nuvi 200 and was able to install all of your programs, and now have all of the caches in my area, along with hints and past logs. Truly a miracle! A million thanks again for all of your hard work.

Prior to running the macro and poi loader, I installed the latest version of the poi loader and updated the firmware on the Nuvi 880. Not sure if it makes any difference but I tried selecting the Nuvi 7XX as well as the Nuvi 6XX when I ran the macro and did not see any difference in the results on the Nuvi. Any other ideas?

Link to comment

Not sure of this one, but did you run the POI Loader manually the very first time and check the target folder to be sure it is where your datafiles have been placed? Should be C:\Program Files\GSAK\POI Loader. Or something close to that. Below that should be one or more folders (don't point POIL to the lowest level - only to the POI Loader folder). Check these folders to assure that the Tourguide files are there - three for each type of cache (Traditional, Multi, Event, etc.)

Link to comment

Deleted POI loader and reinstalled the latest version. Reinstalled the macro and reran it, making sure all was as mentioned on the instructions page. Ran the POI loader manually and made sure it targeted the correct folder. Resulted in a list of my caches on the Nuiv but when selecting any of them to proceed to the next page, now it only shows the cache name and GC#, no cache info, logs, hints, etc. Here's the 3 files that are in my poiloader folder:

Geocache Tourguide - bitmap image

Geocache Tourguide - GSAK file

Geocache Tourguide - JPEG image

Should there be more files in this folder?

I am not having any problems with this Macro. I use it with my 760 and I love it! THANKS again Pilotsnipes.

Does anyone know how many POIs can be loaded onto a nuvi 200 (not a 200W) with this?

I want to load a demo database for a friend that just bought a 200 and want to know how many points can fit.

Deleted POI loader and reinstalled the latest version.

I haven't checked, but the latest version may NOT be ver 2.5.2. We know version 2.5.2 works, so download that one from MY website, (I have a local copy saved there) and make sure your nuvi is also uptodate.

Also, make sure that you are not accidentially loading the wrong poiloader if you have a couple of versions installed on your computer.

I think this issue could be because the special tag %shortname is being used in this macro, and %shortname was not aware of the options set via "Tools=>Options=>General"

The latest build of GSAK addresses this. You can download here

I'm still new to this - I gather from reading the previous posts that I can put more than 500 caches on my Nuvi 200w. I also bought a 1G SD card to add to the memory...

Could someone spell out for me how to add more than 500 caches? I know the PQ can only do 500, so I will have to do more than one PQ. But do I just leave the SD card in the Nuvi? Or do I have to add the caches to the SD card?... Sorry, I'm new and need clarification.

And if you're wondering why I need more than 500 - well, I'm new to the sport (less than 30 finds), and I live in a huge metro area - and I never know where I might be when I want to cach...

Pilotsnipes,

As usual, kudos on the script. It's been working very well, but I have a scenario that maybe you could help me out with.

I have the latest script, pocket queries for caches and found caches. I run the script and upload w/poiloader. All is good.

I found that all the caches are listed with the same icon. As I find more and more - it's harder to remember which I've found already. Since the 760 often crashes if I look at the text, I hate trying. Can I strip out the icon that is included with the script? Or, should I do it another way (multiple input files - one for found caches and one for others? As of now, when I see a caches on the 760 screen, I switch on my 60Csx and the icon will instantly tell me if I've found it already - and even the type (micro, traditional, mystery, found, etc.) if it is a "yet to be found" cache. The 60Csx uses GSAK and the "Nuvi60CsxGarminCsvPoiExport.gsk" script and "Nuvi60CsxIcons.zip" icons files, and both were obtained from the GSAK macro library. Search for "60" in the macro search box (BTW - why isn't your script there??).

As far as I'm concerned, this is about the only thing in the way of making your script 100% complete. I think that having specific icons for found caches or size / type for those yet to be found to be displayed on screen would be the best feature to be added to this amazing script. I'm sure this is no quick edit - so please understand I'm not merely casually mentioning it as if it were a 15 minute edit, I'm sure it would be time consuming - if possible at all.

BTW - any idea about what Garmin is doing to solve the crashing on 760??

Best Regards,

Steve

Finally got it working with the Nuvi 880. Had to pick the Nuvi 3XX when running the macro. The only problem I have now is that the "code" to modify the font of the different colored text shows up instead of the different colored text. I see alot of <br><br><font color = orange, etc. Still useable but any idea what might fix this issue for me?

Link to comment

until I get an 8xx series to play with, I'm going to be fumbling in the dark.

MassCache - I have my thinking cap on....but I may be starting to move into jjreds territory, I'll get back to you...

jjreds didn't come up with the idea of different icons for different POI's.. and I'm not suggesting that jjreds's be used. Supplying several icons of the same image - but with several different names (one for each type cache you care to support as simple placeholders) would suffice. The user could then substitute any one or all with those of their own choice, design, etc. Heck, the default icon could be a simple colored dot.

For me, a combination of features offered in both yours and jjreds work would be ideal - I suspect other people would agree with me on this, too. The full text of caches, up to 10 logs and hint option that you have integrated is just fantastic. I doubt even Garmin saw that coming. I believe the availability of specific icons to be married to different classes if POIs is something however, that Garmin did foresee and planned. There are websites devoted to POI lists and icon libraries for them (see http://www.poifriend.com/), so I don't think you are stepping on jjreds toes (or anyone else for that matter) here.

jjreds created a script to maximize the potential of the 60Csx. (S)he has done an outstanding job with the hardware with which (s)he had to work. Your work with the more technically advanced nuvi however, is far beyond what could be done with the 60Csx. There is much more hardware and memory with which to work with on the nuvi's. The foundation for both is the same: POIs with different icons for each. You've created a very advanced script that will be hard to build upon - I encourage you to incorporate Garmin's POI / icon flexibility into your script's foundation.

Thanks for listening!

Steve

New Garmin Unit Software Update for nuvi 7xx series was released on July 8. This update brings the unit software (for the 760 anyway) to version 3.10. Unfortunately, there is no mention of fixes for unit crashes.

Changes made from version 3.00 to 3.10:

* Improve handling of the situation where overlapping map data is present on the device.

* Fixed fleet management interface route calculation issue.

I'm at work and can't test right now, but it's probably a good idea to update to resolve those issues mentioned.

This update is free to use and download, and is available here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp The recommended (comprehensive) method to update unit software AND voices, text, etc. is done by using the "Garmin WebUpdater" which is also free to use and download. It is available here: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

As for the Sat screen the nuvi 200 and 250 do not have the screen. I emailed Garmin support and got this reply:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

On the Nuvi 250 unit this particular unit does not have the feature of opening sat screen with coordinates and the little orb, instead, you will use the following to get your coordinates or to show your current coordinates on the unit by tapping on where to? Tapping the arrow down button on the next screen twice and then tapping on the coordinates icon, this will bring up your current position or coordinates.

I prefer to use a different screen when I get close,

gpsscreen.jpg

If you set the GPS to display North up and use a compass you can easily see where you are in relation to the cache.

As for caches coming up when you are driving by them, I think that they need to be in your favorites folder to show when you get near them.

View Map -> tap the car -> displays a "do you want to save this to favorites" and gives you your current co-ords :D

Does anyone know how many POIs can be loaded onto a nuvi 200 (not a 200W) with this?

I want to load a demo database for a friend that just bought a 200 and want to know how many points can fit.

As far as I can tell, as many as your GSAK database will hold. I've around 4500 points in mine at the moment, and they all fit onto all the Nuvi's I've tested.

Of course if they do crash your nuvi it's very easy to sort the GSAK database into a particular filter (say less than 300miles away) so that you only have some of the caches displayed and then run the script....

Hi why with my nuvi 260 when i press the green satelite bars nothing happen ???

Nuvi 2xx NON widescreen doesn't allow this.....email garmin and complain!!!

I think this issue could be because the special tag %shortname is being used in this macro, and %shortname was not aware of the options set via "Tools=>Options=>General"

Thanks Clyde for popping in here and helping, I'm sure you're busy enough with your forum!!

Next update will be soon (few days) with only minor tweaks...I'll let jjreds continue with the advance stuff :D

The manual version you had before this latest version with the macros worked fantastic with my Nuvi 300.

The new system works but does not give the full description of the cache, hints or latest logs. I do not have a more button. Will have to find my old notes. Thanks for your excellent efforts
