paganfrog
ive been a member for several years although i havent been an active member on here or out caching. im very interested in the travelbugs and coins, but i am confused about just one thing. do all hitchhikers that are set up have to have a Groundspeak id tag with them? or can we still send out our hitchers without the "so called official" id tag? i have searched the forums for this answer but havent been able to find it. it does annoy me a little because i had the idea that geocaching is an almost free pasttime for anyone to participate in, then if you want to do this hitchhiker thing you HAVE to buy these travelbug tags in order to track them officially. i may be wrong so please feel free to correct me. Neos2
You can send out hitchhikers without the tags that are purchased from GC. They won't be automagically trackable on gc. People can write in the log to a cache that they found "Snuggles the Elf" in geocache XXXXXX and left him in geocache YYYYYYY. Whether they will or not is the chance you take. Naturally, your biggest task will be finding some way to make sure people know they have found 'something that is not swag' and what to do with it. Given the issues with keeping the tagged trackables moving, it's likely an un-(officially)-tagged traveler will experience problems, but you are allowed to make that attempt. Quote Link to comment
+SeventhSon
To be tracked on this site, travel bugs will have to have a tag. Trackable coins have their own number. Without the tag or number, there would be no way of knowing where your bug was. Quote Link to comment
