Is it worth it?

I have 8 TB’s out there 6 is lost! Some is gone with the cache and others have just not been placed in caches again.

Is it worth all the money and trouble to place TB’s if they are going to go missing the whole time? It is frustrating to see that TB is going missing for nothing.

I placed a TB Leona the Lioness in my Blockhouse cache and that one is also gone without being logged. I always wonder why someone takes a TB and don’t log it. It is a numbered item that he can’t really use for anything else.

Pity your TB are taking such strain. Mine a fairing slightly better. TB's do add quite a fun and interest element to caching - I'd say our local caches can do with more of them. I personally quite like moving them around. It also beats me why folks would remove them out of the system.

Sorry to hear that. Must be really frustrating.

I have about 20 odd TB's and copins out there. Been going for about 5 to 6 months now

Nothing missing yet. But possibly one gone in Qatar - Concol will check when he is back next month.

But my feeling is - YES - it's definitely worth it. We love watching and tracking and seeing where they go.

Check the logbook and see if it was signed by someone between the October 27 and November 17 logs. They didn't log on-line but they might have left their name behind in the logbook.

Personally I think bugs are worth it. One of the nice things is if they do go missing you can re-release them again.

Sending you an email about your other bugs.

I love having my travellers out there and watching them travel the world. I enjoy reading about the cache where they are and about the cacher who placed them. I have lost 2 coins so far - VERY sad when that happens but that is the risk we take when we send then out.

My opinion why travellers go missing from a cache COULD be because of the way logging a cache find and a traveller find is designed on the website. They both have to be logged SEPERATELY!! If they could be logged on the same page that might help - as one can when dropping travellers. That is all done on the same page. I remember when I found my first traveller. If somebody - a seasoned cacher - didn't show me that the TB had to be logged on a different page I would have carried that TB around for ages before it got retrieved. Perhaps Groundspeak could look at their page design? Just my opinion.

Agreed - O think the user interface could be easier.

And also when dropping a TB / Coin into a cache. It goes automatically. It would be great if one was prompted to add a comment. I generally have a reason for putting a bug or coin into a particular cache. But don't always get back to do it.

Ditto. That's why we've put 300+ into the field, and will continue to do so.

We also enjoy collecting the flags of the countries they visit.

Sadly, one of our most travelled TBs Around the World in 80 Years (and a good flag-collector) was lost a few days ago :D but has been re-incarnated, and is on the move again!! :D

I love your flags.

Do you have a quick n easy FAQ or DIY tool on how to get that done?

I'd love to plagarise your idea. :D

Nah, but it's quite straightforward. I've found that it's important that all the flags are the identical size otherwise they look funny. I use 60 x 36 pixels. I normally get the flag from wiki (eg: wiki flag of uganda), then size it in Paint. If the flag's got a white background then it looks funny on the white background of the TB page, so I outline a thin black border around the flag (still within the size of 60 x 36).

I upload the flag image onto a bug listing, and link it in to display it. Typical HTML in a TB listing - <img alt="" hspace="0" src=http://img.geocaching.com/track/ccdb85e0-bed8-43a1-8c40-42e9e45c17b8.jpg align="baseline" border="0"> Nov07 - South Africa (North West)<br><br>

I also put the flag into my profile, using a link to the flag image uploaded on the TB listing. Other than the obvious purpose of it being pretty, the flags in my profile are my "library" of flags. I only upload each flag once. If I need the flag again, I copy it's URL from my profile, by using right click, "properties" for the flag image. The HTML in my profile is slightly different - eg: <img alt="" hspace="0" src="http://img.geocaching.com/track/eb55351b-f63e-47a9-860b-70a1368c6453.jpg" align="baseline" border="0"> Australia (South Australia) [3]<br><br>

If you'd like to download the flags I've used in my profile to start your flags library, go for it.

Hope this helps.... :D

I also have about the same percent success as you, so don't really put any out anymore. (I once had 2 TBs taken from me at knife point, which was very sad!)

one of my TBs is currently being used by a cacher in oz as his personal tb to drop in every cache he vists.

I know a long of cachers would love that, but it really annoys me actually, when i see my email is clogged up just with stackes of him dropping the Tb and picking it up again.

It would be cool if he added photos, but last time i checked he hadn't.

I dont have the heart to tell him to stop (

 I only have a few out in the world, but am also fast getting dissapointed, two missing in action and further one in the States the guy has had in his possession for a year now - had a mail six months ago that he was sorry and would sort it out soon! My brand new coin Geocaching Police coin was taken out by a cacher with two caches to his name, not logged out of the cache and does not answer e-mails. Will have to consider letting more travel!

For me a large part of the fun of geocaching are the coins and tb's. I have released about 20 over the last 10 months and have only hade one MIA - fortunately a cheap Travel Slug coin. The biggest risk is the new geocacher who has not read up properly. As a rule I never put TB's and coins of my own or others in a cache unless I feel the it is a quality cache that should not get muggled.

To get back to newbies. The best story I heard of late is of a great micro/nano, GC17FGB , cache down the road from me where the container was a metal whistle that unscrewed to reveal the log. Imagine the look on the owners face when he read the following log "I remember crossing this bridge when it was still in use. Took Whistle left Undewater Hockey Pin" - and there went the whole cache!
