Why gpsr's are cheap in the US

Compared to the rest of the world it appears that Garmin put a premium on the price of their products, but I've just realised that the rest of the world's prices are par and the US users get a rebate built in to the price.

 

This is a cash rebate that recognises the ten billion dollar investment of the US public in gps technology. The US govt kindly decided not to charge a royalty fee for each gpsr sold, so Garmin, altruisticly, just gave it back as an invisible rebate.

Garmin is a US-based company. Most countries charge a hefty import duty on US-made electronic equipment, or even equipement designed in the US and built elsewhere. Hence the higher cost of Garmin products.

 

For Europeans who want Garmin products, best is to order online and have the seller ship the unit as a 'gift', which should bypass the import duty, or maybe reduce it.

 

Of course, with the Euro at an all time high to the dollar, the US is a great place to visit and shop for "toys"!

The US does not have a generous state welfare system that pumps huge amount of money leading to extravagant taxes !!

 

In Francefor ex., you can be poor, sick, illegal, unwilling to work and get free lodging, medical care etc.. Someone got to pay for it no ?

 

French made products are even cheaper in the US than in France !

There is no royalty fee on GPS technology. It's completely funded by the regular tax base. <insert witty, though simplistic and misleading, comment about relative importance of funding health care vs. finding tupperware here >
