+Spuds MacKenzie Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 I recently came across a Garmin GPS72 but have no manual. It works fine but I have to manually enter in all the caches. Is it able to download cache's? It has a 4-pin circle in the back of the unit. If it's able to download, where would I get the appropriate cord with USB connection? Do I need to purchase any software? While scrolling through some of the functions I believe it had a Mapsource function or something? Thanks for any help! Quote
+Red90 Posted April 23, 2008 Posted April 23, 2008 You need a cable. They only come in serial, so if you only have USB, you'll need a serial/usb adapter as well. Both are best bought on eBay as genuine ones are expensive. You can find manuals and such here. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=144&pID=214 As far as programs, pretty much ANY GPS software will work. Some options are listed here: http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/ Quote
+Airmapper Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I made a cable using a Serial plug kit (Radio Shack, dollar or two, limited supply though.) and 3 strands of small gauge wire salvaged out of a old printer cable. The GPS end connector is tricky, I never completed making one, I just wrapped the little wires around the little pins and wedged them secure with the rubber door. Pin-outs can be found online to show which wires go to what pins. Quote
