AZcachemeister
I had my own bit of excitement last weekend. Nothing to compare with a broken window, but potentially much more embarrassing! Logs for Saturday, 5/10/2008: AJ 49 2 / CZ1565 1967, 5 pts. AH 49 / CZ2082 1967, 5 pts. AN 52 / CZ1583 1966, 5 pts. N 348 / CZ1167 1960, 5 pts. Many of the marks hunted over this weekend have large slabs of concrete associated with them, and are supposed to have been used for aerial camera studies (U-2 spy plane?). At the following mark, I found that one of the slabs had been pushed up over the mark, so the owner of the land could plow it. As I bent down to lift the obstructing concrete, I heard a ripping sound, and felt a sudden coolness on my posterior! Fortunately I was able to turn my neon green safety vest into a safety skirt for the remainder of the day! AK 54 / CZ2161 1966, FTR, 50 pts. AJ 55 / CZ2167 1966, 5 pts. AJ 56 / CZ2168 1966, 5 pts. Very challenging when you have to figure out a new route to the benchmark. Next time we are in Arizona we are going to have to make time for benchmarking. I've enjoyed your pictures through out the contest. Being a transplanted Hoosier you would know about the ticks and mosquitoes we encounter here when benchmarking and geocaching. This is not the time of year to be doing either. The last benchmark we tried to recover for the contest was next to RR tracks and had weeds that were at least 7 ft high. They were up and down the sides of the tracks. The only place you could walk and not be in the weeds was on the tracks. Mr Team Fawlty did venture into the weeds. One step into the weeds and I couldn't see him anymore. To make matters worse once you stepped off the tracks the land was about 3 feet below the tracks. I had to toss little pebbles into the weeds to keep him going in the right direction. They were really very high and dense. He had burrs and little fuzzy seeds all over him when he came out. If you benchmark now in remote areas you need lots of Off and a bush hog. I look forward to seeing more of your recoveries and pictures after the contest. Jo Ann Quote Link to comment

Jo Ann Ohhh, it sounds like you guys had tons of fun going into the jungle! Yes, we remember all of the nasty bugs and huge nettles, poison ivy and sumac. I do not miss that at all. We just have scorpions, tarantulas, rattle snakes, black widows, ticks, no-see-ems, super large mosquitoes (where the lookout trees are), etc. The one tree that we are going to try to find is Corral Lake Lookout Tree that in on the national registry of historic things. I cannot seem to find just how old the ladders placed in the trees are, but they sure are interesting. If you are interested, here is a link to Live Search Maps of Historic places in Coconino county. It is really is a fun map to play with. I just found it and have written down all of the lookout trees for the North Kaibab National Forest. It is too bad that they do not have the coordinates with that map. But, at least I can compare it to other maps and get close. Just maybe we can go find a few from this info. If anyone has plans to come to our area for benchmark or Lookout tree hunting and wants to meet these crazy oldfarts - just let PM or Email us and we will oblige you. We might even break some bread with you. But, we would definitly bend your ear some. Shirley~ PS: The 'Tree Tower' at "Angel" is a tree used for communications versus watching for fires. I cannot find any more info on any other Tree Towers at the Grand Canyon. Edited July 4, 2008 by 2oldfarts (the rockhounders) Quote Link to comment

Team Fawlty
Thanks Geo for the Contest. We had fun. It was a difficult contest but the challenge is what made it fun. We pushed our normal limits recovering a couple of the benchmarks for the contest. We went further from our GZ than usual and found some very interesting things. We found a tractor on top of a grain elevator, an old car being used as a lawn decoration, giant statue of Abe Lincoln, and a giant Ice Cream Cone. A place called Pleasant Corners that did not look pleasant, and lots of abandoned railroad stations. We drove on our 1st field road and with extreme caution we walked RR tracks in rural areas, and found benchmarks in weeds taller than us. Once we drove about an hour from home for a recovery. When we got there we found the BM in the side lawn of a house that had not one, not two but THREE big barking dogs tied up just inches from the BM we had come to recover. Mr Fawlty got that picture. One BM was near a Fire department that was practicing putting out car fires. That was interesting. We found Green Acres Dr and Bug Tussle Road. On one recovery trip we even found a Tombstone with our last name on it and no dates. That was kinda creepy. Lots of fun. We are looking forward to the next contest.
