If its a cache that has gone, and the person has stopped caching. There is not a lot you can do except go and remove the old cache (which has now become geolitter) and then set a new one. If the person is still actively caching on another site, then surely they'd have the sense to maintain their email address with geocaching.com for such eventualities as this. If they don't respond to emails, then take the rubbish out. There's too much cr@p lying around in England without encouraging people to leave more - and then to almost maintain it! At least two others actively used (by me, apart from several thousand other people) in the UK... not to mention several letterboxing sites and printed publications. I could name at least a dozen caches within 15 miles of my front door listed on at least one other site as well as GC. The fact that a cache listed on this site within 15 metres of the published co-ordinates has been archived does not mean:- 1. that the cache owner is inactive - he may well be active on other sites. 2. that the cache you are disposing of is the cache that has been archived - unless there's some irrefutable marking on the container. There's no proximity rule where other listings/letterboxes and GC caches are concerned, and even if your GPS is accurate to less than a metre there's no guarantee that the hiders was! It's a fair point... except I know of several cases where a cache setter has lost interest in caching and eventually their abandoned cache gets archived and then the cache just becomes geolitter. Perhaps if the cache is archived by the mods then we can assume that it's been abandoned and remove the geo-litter, but if the owner themselves took the trouble to archive it, assume that they tidied up neatly after themselves. I agree that there is already enough litter lying around without us adding to it. If one of my caches gets muggled and goes missing I always make the utmost effort to find it or the remains, as I am loathe to have any rubbish floating about with the geocaching name on it. Quote
The Royles Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I agree that most reviewer archived caches are abandoned, and are not listed elsewhere. We should have a system that when a cache is archived, the reviewers get in touch with the owner and find out what has happened with the box. If they do not get an adequate reply, then they could ask via the forums if someone would be good enough to remove the box. This gives people a chance to say if it is listed somewhere else, or has been removed. I would be happy to help clean up in this way, and I am sure most people feel the same. So, to go completely off topic, let us start a campain to clean up after ourselves - if we dont it is our hobby that suffers. Do our reviewers (or Groundspeak themselves) have an opinion on this ? We've got two sorry looking former geocaches in our garage which we picked up after the caches were archived by the owners. In both cases the owners assumed they had gone missing after a few DNFs. I logged a note each time saying we'd collected the caches and received a nice thanks email from the owner in response to one of them Quote
