Force Garmin to give better quality translations

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I need your help and support!

- 1st your help in letting me know if text below is not so bad. I'm a French native speaker.

- 2nd your support by adding your name! ;)

Now why am I asking you here (90% English native speaker maybe?) to sign such a petition? Because I believe that you all understand our frustration, you also believe what's in is true and you are willing to help in telling Garmin to listen to users who speak other language than english. They offer different languages in all their devices but the result of the translation are not of any quality.

Take a read at the petition and let me know if the text is fine, it is not too late to make small correction.

Download the document in it to better understand the purpose of it which shows screen captures and exemple. Note that it was the original document sent in August and therefore I won't be able to make any change to it.

The exemples are about a Vista HCx but it seems it's not much better with the new Colorado. I can't tell you more about it as I never seen one. I also understand that the Colorado suffer more of other serious problems than having foreign language being corrected for now but the message I try to pass here is general.

Thank you very much for your support.

Sincerly,

Daniel (also using an alias here and I'm a Premium but I'm using my real name since last summer to get in touch with Garmin)

Great -- I try to view the file and I get some porn crap. Can't you just host a plain text file somewhere or include you letter in your post? Geez...

Seriously? I know there is an ad on sharebee but no porn. I will try to find another file sharing site, any suggestion? I'm really sorry for that.

EDIT: ok I've updated the link to another file sharing site.

My problem is not so the bad quality itself, but because of the bad translations even some functionality is worse in german than if you use the unit in english.

E.g. when you use trackback in german and approach a routingpoint, in english a one line message pops up.

In german at least a 2 line message pops up hiding the location pointer and a big part of the map.

Or if you approach a proximity waypoint, the warning message in german has no linebreak, so that you cannot read the waypointname, because it is off the screen.

I patched the 3.60 firmware of my 60CSX to change all that, and it is not so easy, because the bytes of the shortened messages must be added on another place to keep the addressing functional, but it works now fine.

But nevertheless, Garmin should take care of all that in the original firmware, I agree completely.

Cheers, NZ

Great, you should be the 15th to sign then. :-) Thanks!

Same for french, most of the time, words or sentences are longer then in english.

It is why I prefer english, so I waste less time reading ! ;)

On the other hand, get rid of inch, feet, miles almost nobody really use anymore ! ;)

I fully support Daniel L's comment.

French localization is not only hawful but sometimes misleading or confusing.

I have to switch to English to undesrtand some items.

3 years ago, I have proposed to correct, for free, all the mistakes: never got an answer from Garmin...

I am bi-lingual, French native, used to translate Pocket PC/Smartphones/... apps from English to French. I am not affraid by lack of room for French strings!

It seems they have the problem in more languages ...

I also suggested them when I sent my document, in fact my document was a start.

Unfortunatly, people read this topic but don't participate, same for other forums. If only one read = one sign it would be great but it's not the case at all. You would think with hundreds reads a day to get 50% sign, it take just 20 seconds to sign but it's not the case.

It is sad because there's a few comments like you where people totally agree so somewhere this is real for everyone.

I did sign-off the petition ;)

Yes I knew, you wrote a comment similar to here. ;)

But 15 only with over 200 views is not what I would call a success. And if someone have not signed the 1st time I don't know why they would sign a day or 2 later so I will proceed differently.
