Moving Geocache

do you know why they stopped them? it seems a realy good idea. i only had the idea because i was shamlessly copying an TB that i had picked up, and thought this would be even better if you could count it as a find. plus it solves the problem of getting the land owners permission.

Oh boy, that's a good one. Not only why they stopped them, but when? I'll bet it was pretty early on, about the time virtuals were eliminated. Did a quick forum search, and didn't come up with anything. Personally, I've found only one, and it was hundreds of miles from my home coords in another State (and to stay put within the State I found it in). There are other geocaching websites that accept moving caches, and I've seen several geocaching organizations who track thier own local moving caches on their websites.

I still think a TB with cache-like contents would be pretty cool.

Actually, it complicates the problem. I can recall several examples where a moving cache was placed in an area where geocaches were either regulated or banned.

The listing service stopped publishing new moving caches in spring of 2003. The existing ones are grandfathered but their numbers are dwindling as either the containers or their owners go missing.

The finds were logged just like any other cache though it appears to have gone missing over a year ago.

I have found Oakland Transit half a dozen times or so in the past. The cache owner is the last one to have picked it up, and still has it. Since he hasn't cached in a few years, I'm assuming he doesn't plan to hide it again. Several of us have tried emailing him about adopting it since there are so few of them, but all emails go unanswered.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think grandfathered caches can be adopted. That is why the numbers are dwindling like they are.
