Hey WHRHS!

There hasn't been anything organized that is county specific yet, but currently NJ is home to three regional caching groups.

North New Jersey Cachers

Central Jersey Geocachers

South Jersey Geocaching

There just happens to be three geocaching events in the very near future.

3/15/2008 Kiss Me I'm Irish Meet & Greet Event in Randolph, NJ

3/18/2008 Third Tuesday Beer and Burgers - 2008 Edition, monthly meet in New Brunswick

4/5/2008 NNJC Spring Picnic - Tiki Stomp Party, at the Watchung Reservation.

As for competitions and challenges; Geocaching is generally a passive and non-competitive activity, but there have been lots of personal and group competitions over the years, however, GC.com does not typically publish events where finding caches is the primary objective.

With that said, you might want to check out the Tour de Cache series of caches. (County Challenge & Delorme Challenge.

The Central Jersey group is working on a scavenger hunt type cache and a road rally type event, so hopefully you'll see those by the summer.

Have a representative (or two or ALL) attend any of the above listed events, and you will find a wealth of information from some very seasoned cachers...

You are all more than welcome, and encouraged, to attend!

The "NNJC Spring Event - Tiki Stomp Party (GC19YTT)" at the Watchung Reservation is also very close to Watchung Hills RHS...

Welcome to the game! Like CJG said, it's tough to put together a true geocaching 'competition' unless you're operating along the lines of a high-speed, GPS-assisted orienteering outing, which Groundspeak usually doesn't allow to be listed. Much more common are events like the ones suggested. Event caches usually consist of a get-together at a local establishment or picnic ground, or a group hike, with some unusual social games thrown in as a twist sometimes to keep things interesting. (For example, there was a murder-mystery event a while back that people still talk about.) Anyway, events are a great way to meet local cachers and share the glory of your exploits, so feel free to come out and make yourselves known.
