+Morgan Buchanan
Below the asterisks is a description of a Garmin 76S unit that a guy on another forum I know has for sale. I'm interested in geocaching and motorcycling... Is this a good deal? I know NOTHING. And I mean NOTHING. The sum total of my experience with GPS was watching a Tom Tom give turn by turn directions to a driver on a route I knew by heart. LOL ****************************************** I've got a nearly new Garmin 76S GPS unit for sale. I have GPS in/on all my vehicles and since I sold my snowmobile, this one has no place to live anymore. Comes with the unit, handlebar mount, locking 12 volt cable, original box and paperwork, Mapsource street-level and POI software (East and West) and Mapsource TOPO software (entire country). I've got about $900 or more tied up in this, but would take $200 for the whole deal. ****************************************** Thoughts and opinions would be MOST welcome. My unedumacated self thinks that this sounds like a good deal. I thank you sincerely in advance. Quote Link to comment
sanramonhunter
That's a decent price for all that stuff, if that's the unit you like. The 76s is a non-color unit. Without knowing the version of the mapping software it's hard to tell if they would be useful it might be quite a bit out of date. The topo is probably 4.20 and that is fine. The GPS unit is worth about $90. The topo worth about $50. handlebar mount $15. Street level is hard to say without knowing which version. If the power adapter is $15 if it's the kind that goes into a cigarette adapter not hard wired. The big question is what do you plan on using the unit for? If you don't need street maps you can get a much newer model for that amount or less. Edited March 2, 2008 by sanramonhunter Quote Link to comment

Well I was intending on using it on my motorcycle around town, and I do travel to other cities in Texas and Oklahoma on my bike as well... so basically I'd be using it for getting around and geocaching. sanramonhunter
The 76s doesn't do turn by turn directions so if that's something your interested in I wouldn't buy it. Here is a link to the spec on the 76s https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=183 Quote Link to comment
+Morgan Buchanan
Well, I pulled the trigger and got this from the guy. Seems like a good entry into it to play around a bit and not lose my shirt if I don't like it. I doubt that I wouldn't be able to turn it around and not take MUCH loss if I don't dig it. Thanks y'all. I knew it didn't do turn by turn, I didn't care about that. I just like to know generally where I'm going, I find the journey more important than the exact path. I'm never lost, I just spend some time "investigating alternate destinations." Edited March 2, 2008 by Morgan Buchanan Quote Link to comment
