Custom Maps...

Thanks to topics posted in this forum, I now able to create custom Mapsource compatible maps and load them to Mapsource and my GPS. The maps are transparent so any images in the custom maps are overlaid onto the default maps.

Here's a couple examples of a bike trails I've rode in the past several days:

From the image you can see I've selected my own mapset "Custom Maps" in Mapsource.

The maps were created using 3 zoom levels, from a distance the lake becomes visible, than the park boundary and finally the trails.

The information for creating maps came from this forum from this link...

I create my maps using a slightly different technique than the video uses.

1) I upload my tracks from my GPS to Mapsource

2) I save the file as a *.gpx file format instead of *.gdb (default) *

3) I open the file with GPSMapEdit and covert the tracks to polylines or polygons.

4) I export the file as a *.img file **

5) I use MapSetToolKit to load and register the new map to Mapsource.

*I also use a application named ExpertGPS to add detail to the maps.

** Note: if you watch the video bump the RGN level up to 500 in lieu of 127 or cGPSMapper will complain...

All the needed software is free (or shareware for more enhanced versions)
