Nokia 770 internet tablet and caching?

Recommended Posts

I use my 770 almost exclusively while out and about caching. It's not your typical pda and i haven't found a way to use regular caching programs but i did manage to get cache pages stored into it.

There are two ways that i have found that work,,, one makes the file into an ebook which can be read with a reader on the Nokia. I haven't used that method in a good while so i don't remember how to do it.

The 2nd way, and the way i use now, is to put the query into GSAk, then export as an html file. Copy this file into the Nokia, then disconnect the USB so that you can open it on the Nokia. If it is a query of more than 100 caches then it will be a little slow to laod but it will eventually open and once you have it open, it will be pretty fast. After the file finishes loading, scroll down and find the "index" file. Tap on it and the bowser will open giving a selection on how you want to look up the caches. It works pretty good and most of the time even gets pictures that are embedded on the cache pages.

I tried the Mozilla browser and didn't like it as much as the Opera but i think either will work with this 2nd method.

Outstanding! Thanks, I'll give this a go. If a 100 cache export is slow, though, I wonder how my normal 500 cache export will load? :anicute:

I know many 770 folks use the eBook reader program (FBReader?). I wonder it would load the .html files faster than the Opera or Mozilla browser....

Were you just going to use it for a paperless record, or did you get a bluetooth GPS for it?

If you install the latest OS release and install Maemo Mapper, you can import maps from many different sources at various zoom levels and have all sorts of fun. This includes Google maps, Google satellite maps, Topo maps, aviation maps, etc...

The Holux 1000 bluetooth GPS works really well on the Nokias -- I have a N770 and a friend has an N800, and it works great with both of them. The only issue is losing the bluetooth signal when you get near a large cell tower.

We don't have any bluetooth devices to interface with it, we were just considering it as a paperless cache assistant, perhaps a bit more functional than our Zire 72 PDA. It arrives in a few days, can't wait to try it out.

I thought I once stumbled upon a "GSAK for Linux" thread somewhere, I'll have to try and dig it back up and then test it on this particular distro.
