itsky
Hello All, I just got a Garmin Colorado 300 (which is great by the way), and I want to hard wire it in my truck. Before with my Garmin 60csx, I used a cable like this: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=519 But I just called Garmin and they don't offer one for the Colorado honestly WTF?? I don't want a a cable running permanently from my cig lighter to the unit so do any of you guys know a work around? Is there another cord/fuse combo or set of wires that I can use? Thanks for the help! Ryan Quote Link to comment
+jotne
This should work with your Colorado http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?f...+video+mp3+mini Not as integrated as the one you have for 60CSx, but inexpensive. Quote Link to comment

He stated that he doesn't want to use the cig lighter, he wants a direct wire cable. This won't be entirely trivial to do, since the Colorado wants 5 volts or there abouts, and you have to get the mini USB pins configured correctly so that the Colorado doesn't go into hard disk mode. I haven't seen anything like this offered anywhere. Quote Link to comment
itsky
Marky, Thanks for the info, I didn't realize the 5 volt problem... I would be very upset if Garmin didn't offer a bare wire, don't a lot of people hard wire in the car? Would this somehow work? http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Power-Adapter...0310&sr=8-1 Quote Link to comment
-Oz-
I hard wired my 60csx by cutting the end off a cig lighter plug and then putting in a fuse and holder from checker auto parts. Was easy and has worked great for 2 years. Quote Link to comment
Baumer
buy an auxillary 12v plug and stuff it under your dash connect it with one of these http://www.amazon.com/Littelfuse-FHA200BP-...t/dp/B0002BGELQ Quote Link to comment
bhj1
Ryan, How did you accomplish getting 5 volts to your Garmin 60? I think the only way to effectively and safely hard wire any of the Garmin handhelds is to utilize a 12V dc adapter. I hard wired my Garmin 2006 on my boat, but it's input voltage range is something like 10-15 volts dc. Is there another method of hard wiring a handheld in a vehicle to make sure it only gets 5 volts dc? Bill Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Yes, these units don't allow the unregulated power supply like older models. My suggestion is to buy a cigarette lighter to USB adapter and hard wire it in somewhere out of view and then run a USB cable to the unit. The adapters only cost a few dollars. Like this, http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Car-Charger-AC-Ada...1QQcmdZViewItem Or buy the normal unit like this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-12V-Power-Cable-Ga...1QQcmdZViewItem Then buy a female cigarette lighter socket and wire it in out of sight. +Marky
Then buy a female cigarette lighter socket and wire it in out of sight. That's a workable solution, and probably cheaper than any custom cable would be. Quote Link to comment

Bill USB need 5 volt, but the round plug can take any from 9 to 36 volt, so no need for a converter. And this wire are for the round plug. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=519 Quote Link to comment
+jotne
I did try my USB adatper for my Edge 305, and this does not look good. As soon as it get power on the USB it goes into USB - PC mode. So how to power a Colorado in the car?? Quote Link to comment

itsky
Thanks for the replies guys......I really wanted the bare cable b/c it's not spiraled and it looks great when I installed it on my prior 60csx. I guess I will have to install the cig plug under my dash and buy the vehicle adapter. Here's my guess: I go through the trouble, and then they come out with the proper bare wire. itsky
Garmin returned my email about a bare ware, he said "he believes one is in the works" maybe I'll try to be patient, or I'll just install a cig plug under the dash... Quote Link to comment
