Hard wire a Garmin Colorado?

Hello All,

I just got a Garmin Colorado 300 (which is great by the way), and I want to hard wire it in my truck. Before with my Garmin 60csx, I used a cable like this:

But I just called Garmin and they don't offer one for the Colorado :o honestly WTF?? I don't want a a cable running permanently from my cig lighter to the unit so do any of you guys know a work around?

Is there another cord/fuse combo or set of wires that I can use?

Thanks for the help!

Ryan

This should work with your Colorado

Not as integrated as the one you have for 60CSx, but inexpensive.

He stated that he doesn't want to use the cig lighter, he wants a direct wire cable. This won't be entirely trivial to do, since the Colorado wants 5 volts or there abouts, and you have to get the mini USB pins configured correctly so that the Colorado doesn't go into hard disk mode. I haven't seen anything like this offered anywhere.

Ryan,

How did you accomplish getting 5 volts to your Garmin 60? I think the only way to effectively and safely hard wire any of the Garmin handhelds is to utilize a 12V dc adapter. I hard wired my Garmin 2006 on my boat, but it's input voltage range is something like 10-15 volts dc.

Is there another method of hard wiring a handheld in a vehicle to make sure it only gets 5 volts dc?

Yes, these units don't allow the unregulated power supply like older models.

My suggestion is to buy a cigarette lighter to USB adapter and hard wire it in somewhere out of view and then run a USB cable to the unit. The adapters only cost a few dollars.

Like this, http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Car-Charger-AC-Ada...1QQcmdZViewItem

Or buy the normal unit like this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-12V-Power-Cable-Ga...1QQcmdZViewItem

Then buy a female cigarette lighter socket and wire it in out of sight.

USB need 5 volt, but the round plug can take any from 9 to 36 volt, so no need for a converter.

And this wire are for the round plug.

Thanks for the replies guys......I really wanted the bare cable b/c it's not spiraled and it looks great when I installed it on my prior 60csx.

I guess I will have to install the cig plug under my dash and buy the vehicle adapter.

Here's my guess: I go through the trouble, and then they come out with the proper bare wire.
