+A.T.Hiker Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Does anyone know if there are any mapping progams that allow you to do elevation profiling from elevation data contained directly within the topo maps? (National Geographic Topo, Google Earth, etc.). What I'm trying to do is essentially disregard any GPS elevation data recorded in the tracklog because it's too erratic. I would like to use the GPS tracking data, but NOT the GPS elevation data, and instead let the program do it's own elevation profile based on topography data contained within. Is this possible with any known program? (National Geographic Topo, Google Earth, etc.). Help is appreciated! Quote
Grasscatcher Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 NG Topo will do what you want. You can "hand draw" a track, select it, and do a profile. The profile will be drawn from the DEM data of the maps. Of course it will also draw a profile from a GPS'd track that has been downloaded from your unit. Quote
Baumer Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 export to or open the track file directly in google earth, modify the properties of the track it generates to "pin to ground" Quote
+Kit Fox Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 I use NatGeoTopo for this frequently. I clear my track before my hike, then when i'm done, I save the track, and upload it into NatGeo. This is a photo collage of the route, and elevation profile for one of my hikes. The reason for the photo collage was to show both the map and the profile as an image. Quote
-Oz- Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 With any track you can use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com which will overlay your track over anything. Not sure if it'll do the profile but it allows for some neat manipulation of your path. Quote
+A.T.Hiker Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 Folks- Thanks for the help!! The National Geographic TOPO is exactly what I"m looking for, thanks! I'm planning to buy the new Natioanl Geographic TOPO web-based program when it comes out in May. Hopefully, it will retain this feature. Quote
