+Packanack
Lot of news about Bats dying of a fungal infection, so much so that they are asking people to stay out of mines, caves and hollows where bats hibernate . You can google for info, but it was in the paper today. http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/viewnews.php?id=118337 Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
Interesting. They didn't track bat populations. Has there been a surge? Dry summers and less insects to give less fat reserves? Quote Link to comment
+nikcap
Bummer about the Bats. It's probably the same thing that killed all the honey bees ... cell phones! NJ actually has a informal summer bat count. Edited February 5, 2008 by ekitt10 Quote Link to comment
+Packanack
TREE HUGGER ALERT TREE HUGGER ALERT There are some environmental theorist who view these collapsing colonies as a portent of greater problems to come. No bats, more mosquitos, etc. etc. To many swings or variables throwing things out of kilter. The big bat place around here is Hibernia. There are some caches near there, but there are also places like Roomy Mine where bats do hibernate and I am sure in some of the other mines that people may come across. I know a couple of cachers who like to explore mines and they are not the least bit batty. I also know that some of the shafts in some places are open even if they are not cached. Edited to add the alert, which my son insist I give before launching into enviro speak as he calls it. Like if it is not about the Giants or X Box it is not important. +briansnat
...but there are also places like Roomy Mine where bats do hibernate Yeah, about 10. I was in there in the winter several times before it was closed in the fall/winter. It's not exactly a huge colony. I'm sure there are more bats in the eves of my house. Quote Link to comment
