Geocaching Groups in Beds/Bucks

Hi

Although I'm a 'newbie' to all this I am looking for a local geocaching group to socialize with.

Local social groups lack the excitement that I yearn for, I have done about a dozen caches (although not posted yet), but this is becomming a bit tedious as a loner sport. I am in my late 40's and yearn for some excitement to fill my weekends away from the pressures of work.

If there is not a group I have thought about starting one up, but as yet with only one potential member (me). I thought the group could be mainly based on geocaching but could offer other activities like karting, skiing, and paintballing if other member requested this.

Would apreciate your veiws to this.

Maurice

Geocaching doesn't really have recognised regional groups or clubs... or not in the way that I think you mean. :D

Most "socialising" goes on at the various Event caches that get listed in different areas throughout the year. Some are one day events, or an evening meet-up in a local pub, while others extend over several days and often include camping. The Events are an excellent way of meeting other geocachers from your area and then from these contacts more informal groups may sometimes decide to get together for a day of caching in a particular area, or to do a specific geocache.

If you look above in the "Multiple Pinned Topics" you'll find a link to several local Forums, including one for S.E. Cachers where you might make contact with others from your region.

From finding the caches near to you, you will already be familiar with the names of some of your local cachers who have placed the caches. However, as you haven't actually logged any of your "finds" on-line as yet, I would suggest that this would be an important first-step to take ASAP. Try and make your logs interesting feedback for the cache setter - The on-line logs are the "pay back" for those who make the effort to place caches for others enjoyment and it will also let them know that there's a new geocacher around their patch. In this way your caching name will get known and when you finally meet up with other cachers at an Event (or wandering somewhere in the darkest depths of rural Bucks/Beds :( ) they might actually know who you are. :D

There's a regular monthly meet in Berkshire on the second Thursday of every month at The Cunning Man, Pingewood, Reading - The Cunning Cacher Meets. I suppose we could now classify ourselves as a group because there are several regulars and we have been meeting up for a year now. We welcome new people to come and join us for a chat and some geocoin fondling and travel bug swapping. This month's meet though, and for this month only, has moved to a Wednesday night because of Valentine's Day. The events are currently being organised by The Teddies who very kindly took it over from me because of my domestic commitments, although I do manage to get along to most of them. So if you are available on the 13th of this month, you will find the details here . You will be made very welcome and meet some nice friendly geocachers. Liane :(

Berkshire might be a bit of a push if you're looking on the beds/bucks border. I am guesssing you must be Milton Keynes way?

If you want to meet local cachers and there's not an event near you, I am sure someone can help you setup an event at a pub near you, like the meet in Berkshire that has been mentioned above.

If you're looking for people to cache with, why don't you pick a series of caches you can do as a circular walk with a few pubs along the way , come back on here and ask if anyone wants to come caching - usually does the trick

If you want to come night caching, PM me but you'll need nerves of steel and a big torch.

Many thanks to all posts, this has given me some ideas. I did see the posting for the Berkshire meet but considered it a bit far out of may area. Anyways will continue to keep looking, If anyone from the Beds/Bucks area looking for some company drop me a line here.

Again many thanks.

I am on the Beds/Bucks/Herts boundary. I have been thinking about setting up a regular meet in the style of the Berkshire one. Team Phoebe suggested we move the event up and down the train line (Hemel, Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes) to rotate the driving for differen t cachers at different times.

I can see the point of having a group, as it could serve as a help group to set up paperless caching, club togther to purchase items, plan caching days, etc.

Oi! Read the post... I'm not Team Phoebe any more!

But yes, we were supposed to be doing something together Ali - I think our impending trip seems to have clouded my mind (and judgement)

Suggest something (and somewhere) if you want to meet up.... anyone wants to help/join, you can always email me at me@theotherstu.co.uk

Sounds good to me. There's lots of fine pubs on the borders, amongst the villages north/south of Leighton Buzzard too. I'd rather not see it held in the same area over and over as that doesn't provide fresh caches to discover around it. Wouldn't be hard to have monthly or bi(tri?)-monthly events and I'd be happy to help.

Seems our south bucks cachers are caught in the middle of these events

I have been thinking of something along these lines for Oxfordshire for over a year now, but have just been too lazy  to get it off the ground. What I was thinking was the meet would move around Oxfordshire with the organiser of the following months meet volunteering (volunteered :D)at the meet. I would expect this to be on a weekday evening, probably on the same day/week each month. If there is interest in this I will happily get it off of the ground with one at Oxford.

I’m sure that this could be flexible enough to include areas of adjacent counties.

Hey Fraggle don't look so glum, there's no reason why you can't get involved too.

Reason for my initial post is that it's more fun with more than one, Now wouldn't it be fun to organize events and competions involving different groups.

In my younger days (a very long time ago - bout time of dinosaus so my son tells me) I was a member of a youth social group (18+), we had our own group up here in Bedford, but we also got involved with other groups around the country.

Although I am fairly new to this I can see some real potential in geocaching and other activities aimed at improving ones outlook on life, even to the extent of an 'activity' based social group for all ages. I've tried 'social groups' in my area and am disapointed with the 'age labelling activities' that they partake in, like karoake and opera. I wanted to go walking, skiing, karting etc, then I found Geocaching (from a 'plug' on a local radio station). What fun I had (although all I had to start with was compass and map), now this is what i wanted, the great outdoors, fresh air, the fun of the hunt, the thrill of finding the cache, the disapointment when you don't. (takes me back to my scouting days) I'm no longer almost 50, Im more like a spritly 15yo (although a bit slower). But something is still missing - friends, this sport is what you make of it, yes you can do it alone but surely the enjoyment will be greater if you are with others.

I have nerves of steel, and a very big torch indeed. What do you have in mind?

I'm getting excited about the prospect of more regular pub meets  We did think about moving our Berkshire one about a bit, but we love The Cunning Man - good beer and food and excellent service - and by keeping it constant the regulars know exactly where we will be on the second Thursday of each month., except we won't be this month because we are meeting on the Wednesday as a one off

The advantage of having it at different venues each time though is as you say spreading the responsibility for organising it and sharing the travelling. And most importantly, new caching opportunities which will be brilliant when the lighter evenings kick in. :D:):)

Just another thought

As a growing sport, surely we have to promote as much as possible. Let muggles know we are here and not a 'closed' community. At the moment I get some very strange looks when I am looking for a cache (not to mention when I am loitering waiting for a muggle to move so I can be discrete retrieving)

Later this year (I think June - but will have to check) in Bedford we have our biannual river festival, This is celebrations held over a weekend (2 days). This would be an ideal time to promote Geocaching (uk), also to point out that we do much good in keeping the countryside clean.

Thoughts please.

Did anybody hear any monkey noises there? I am sure that I didn't!

If The Phllies organise Oxfordshire events, then fine, I will probably do my best to attend them... but the far flung reaches of Oxfordshire are a bit... er, far flung for me!

I was thinking of a direct equivalent of the Berks Cunning Cachers, and all those other regional meets which are held on a weekday evening. I do like the idea of finding a volunteer for the next meet at the current one, to keep the event moving about. I have already sussed out a pub near me (hic!) so I will see about putting something together and see who bites.

Remember, anything that I may organise does NOT preclude anybody else from organising something. I firmly believe that nobody 'owns' any dates /venues/ ideas/ festivals / regions.

Sounds like a top idea Alibags, do you think we can have a raffle at each one to determine who hosts the event the following month/two weeks/week?

As for night caching, my trip tonight won't interest the Doc, coz he's already been there done that. When I get some place you haven't cached Ill let you know

Banned? I don't think so, who banned you? What happens if you come out with the fraggle in daylight and we don't get you home till 4am??

Banned since Monday, when you last went night caching, you mean TossyWossy?

Frag... where you going? Anywhere interesting?

Well, see, I'm allowed if the Tiger is with me, but she doesn't like Night Caching (she didn't mind on the FTF at 6pm).

There was this event and the boys decided at about 1am that it would be fun to go Caching in area after a bit of drinking..... and er, we sort of followed the arrow literally and er drunk some more........ I'm sure there are other people on the Forum who might be able to fill you in

There are actually quite a few cachers in dear old Beds!!

I've been in Bed(s) all my life and have done one or two caches ;)

I've seen it, (Beds) described as "a stinking Brickyard in the middle of a Brussel field!!", well description is about right, until end of 02/08 when the Brickfields will be no more. ;)

Most of the "old" cachers are more towards Luton, there are some very, very old ones that way, wont name names as I think most can run faster then me

Think we should put a toll booth on the A6 at Barton to keep the Luton hoards out :o

If your new to the "game" drop me an e-mail, glad to talk about beds caching anytime you like.

Cheers

Nick (An orignal Beds Clanger)

PS:- Im from a village between Bedford and Shefford, wont name it, just in case the hoards from Luton take offence and come looking for me :D:P

PPS:- Watch out for those bucks, they are very devious, WELL some of their caches are!!!!!!! :D;)

Hi BedsClanger

Prob will take you up on that in a month or so when I've had time to evaluate this etrex thing and work slows down to a more comfortable pace.

Still looking for prospective members for a bedford club.

By the way I luv sprouts, and I don't think we will get rid of all the brickworks yet, just we are now getting a big fish tank instead.

I used to work in Barton until they shut the factory down.

Must go now

I'm doing a lot of night caching now - I find that the setting of the sun isn't as big a barrier to caching as I thought it was, provided you have a big torch (I have a torch like a horse), and don't mind occasionally falling over, and sometimes geting lost.

Back to the subject - I do like the idea of a regular monthly meet, like "First Monday of the month", or something like that. I might even be able to persuade the reclusive ladysolly to attend.

I have some news for Bucks/Beds/Herts and beyond cachers!

The Bucks/Beds/Herts Border-ing on the Ridiculous #01 cache event is set for Wednesday February the 20th at the Globe Inn, beside the canal close to Leighton Buzzard. I hope to see you there momagic48. If not, the plan is for a local cacher to hold an event per month somewhere in the BBH border area, so there should be something else along in due course. I believe Alibags has something planned for her 21st (approx) birthday on March the 12th...

Thanks to Lacto for reviewing this one so quickly :drama:

Just a little reminder the first of these events is on this Wednesday from 6.30pm (Handy link!) AND there are around 40 NEW CACHES IN THE AREA! Huge thanks to The Other Stu for all his efforts - plus I believe a physical is going in at the pub too (cheers JollyJax)

Mr.Dewdrop is planning a night caching expedition after the event to track some down and I and DrSolly will be in the area during the day to Hoover some up by bike.

Looks like it could be a hell of a day (or night!) out :drama:

Reminder for this; It's tomorrow!

John, I'm expecting people to either fall into the pub at the end of a very long day, or use it to muster some dutch courage before heading out into what's looking like a chilly night. Bring a hat and gloves folks. A wee dram might help too... :o

I'm hoping some paperless cachers will be on site to show off their hardware and explain what's what to beginners- like me. Ali, Stu, please remember to bring your bluetooth GPS units with you!

After a 6am start, I expect to stagger exhaustedly into the pub, and I'll need quite a large dram before going out again in the evening.

If people are interested, I can show-and-tell the technology that we use.

Thanks very much to everyone who came to this last night. With 40+ new/ish caches in the area, it seems lots of people made a big adventure of it. Special thanks to The Other Stu for all his local setting efforts and congratulations to John Phillimore for having the foresight to arrange to have his birthday on the same day as the event.
