Big Yac
I have a Garmin Etrex Legend...the blue one. I'm wondering, how can I load some maps in it without using any map source programs? I work alot in GIS and use many mapping programs such as ArcView, Terrain Navigator, etc. Is it possible to load maps in using Terrain Navigator? I know I can send and receive waypoints, tracks and routes to and from Terrain Navigator but what about maps? Thanks. Edited January 14, 2008 by Big Yac Quote Link to comment

+BlueDeuce
I'm not aware that you can load any maps other than the ones from Garmin. Considering the cost of those maps, the small memory size of the Blue, and you can't transfer the unlock code to another gps, I wouldn't do it. Quote Link to comment
Big Yac
thats why I dont want to buy the additional maps because of the memory my legend has and the expense. I already have this mapping program which lets me transfer to and from my gps tracks, routes, and waypoints plus I can plot out topos or turn on the 1m aerials...I sometimes export the waypoints and such as shapefiles and bring them into ArcMap where I can lay them on 1ft or 6 inch color aerials. What format are the maps which are loaded onto the gps from mapsource? .img files? Quote Link to comment

+Red90
You must use Garmin format maps. However, there are 3rd party apps for putting them on the GPS, such as Sendmap, http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mdipol/img2gps/ There are also many tools available to convert from other map formats to Garmin and lots of free maps available. http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/ Quote Link to comment
