+Turkey Trotter Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Ok, I have been missing for quite a while now and have just found my GPSr again. I decided to creat Pocket Queries to get the current database into GSAK and found that there are so many more than I imagined. So the question is, does anybody have an up to date list of PQ I would need to build the complete cache database? Quote
+sssss Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 in the gsak macros website you can find a macro that will make you a list, Quote

+Team Sieni Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Thanks for the link. I am curious though, how do I use google earth to acquire this information? Well, GE has an overlay wotsit so you can fly around the country seeing all the caches. So you can see all the caches in the UK using GE. I put a winky smiley thing next to it because although it gives you a window onto all of the caches in the UK it has limitations and some people don't like it. If you wanted to do some obscure stats like what difficulty 5 cache with two consecutive vowels in its name that has remained unfound for the longest, then it won't help. But if you want a quick shufty at all the caches in and around Thingytown, Wotsitshire, and then want to zoom off to South Doodah - it's ideal. Quote

GE would be even better if you could filter on cache types and owned/found caches like the geocache google map does............perhaps it does! Anyone know? TLHM Quote

+Jaz666 Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 To get the whole UK into gsak on a weekly basis now needs two premium member accounts, as it requires over 50 PQs now. This is a current workable date range setup. +Team Sieni Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 GE has an overlay wotsit... Where? Go to My Account Details, and on the left hand side is a column with Account Options, Premium Features, and down there is "Google Mapping Features". I wasn't suggesting this as a complete alternative to building your own giant offline DB, if you really want to. Just that unless you have a very specific purpose in mind, you could save yourself an awful lot of effort by using the GC.com tools and GM and GE. Quote
+Team Sieni Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Right hand side... Durrr. Yeah, Right hand side. Sorry. Quote

Sorry if I'm being a bit dim (the last coffee is wearing off!) but why would you want a complete UK cache database? What do you do with it? My job takes me all over the country, often at very short notice. My current record is Glasgow, Newquay, Cambridge in 3 days in that order! It's handy to be able to interrogate GSAK before I set off & load caches close to my work area into my Ipaq. Quote

Thanks Jamie, just what I wanted. Anybody who asked the question "Why do you want the whole database?". I would like to keep an up to date list on GSAK. Once the database is complete then queries only need to check for updated and new caches over the past week. With a complete updated database I can do lots of interesting (to me anyway) analysis which I can then use in planning caches, trips and other stuff. Quote

In essence this is true but relying on 'updated / placed in the last 7 days' type PQs to keep your GSAK database current has one drawback... I believe that 'updated' refers to cache pages that have been updated by the cache owner, not those that have just had a new log entry added. If a cache has had a string of DNF logs added since it was loaded into or last updated, in your GSAK database, you won't know about it until it's too late; which can be a bit of a bummer Quote
+Turkey Trotter Posted January 24, 2008 Author Posted January 24, 2008 ^^^^^ When I said updated, what I should have said was updated and/or found in last 7 days. Sorry for any misunderstanding Quote
+Pharisee Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 ^^^^^When I said updated, what I should have said was updated and/or found in last 7 days. Sorry for any misunderstanding With something over 24,000 active and temporarily disabled caches there could be an aweful lot of caches that have been found in the last seven days. With only 500 per PQ, I suspect you're still going to need a lot of PQs to keep a whole of the UK database up to date. Quote
