Wintertime
Hi, Martin. Hey, be careful digging around old WWII areas where you see things on a metal detector! It's easy to create a new topic on this forum. Go to the main page of this forum. You'll see an icon near the upper right that says "New Topic." Click on that, type a subject in the Topic Title field (you don't need to give a Topic Description unless you want to), then enter your message and click Post New Topic. (Or click Preview Post first.) Your English is just fine! I've seen Internet postings from native English speakers who aren't as understandable as you are! Patty Quote Link to comment
+cjf
Found this while visiting Joshua Tree National Park. First to find! This is looking towards Twenty Nine Palms, California. Papa-Bear-NYC
LX1774 SIDE This is on the east side of the Hudson about 1/2 miles north of the Manitiou Metro North flag stop (weekends only), and a bit over a mile north of the Bear Mountain Bridge. I couldn't find this last fall. Note from the dark color and moss where the tide reaches. I suspect it may have been under or close to under the high tide then. Here's RM 1 in the foreground. That's a bit lower and definately would have been under water. Edited June 2, 2008 by Papa-Bear-NYC Quote Link to comment
+27E_20
These are pictures of a mark I just happened to stumble upon while geocaching in Iraq. Nothing special to look at, but I figured the location is what makes it unique. As you guys can imagine, I was extremely surprised to see one of these, considering the circumstances. Obviously, I cant tell you where without someone yelling and screaming about OPSEC, even though you can see everything and more on Google Earth. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Got home a few weeks ago and I plan on going on my first all day BM trip tomorrow, so hopefully Ill have some more pics to add. Quote Link to comment

Papa-Bear-NYC
A very hot and humid day made the hike up Breakneck Ridge, near Beacon NY, very exhausting. But still a few good pictures made it out of the camera. andylphoto
In some ways, not a spectacular view, but I enjoyed finding the cairn that was built over 50 years ago. The original description of RK0590, MULLIGAN, says a pole tower was left standing at the site. I was hoping to find a tower, or at least the remains of it, but as you can see from the photo, nada. +TheBeanTeam
Here is a mark (MX0106) in Dunsmuir California that provided an interesting view up the street to the California Theater. This one (LU0170) only had the stem but was a fun find anyhow. An abandoned arch bridge along Old Highway 99 in Northern California. Nice hike and stunning views. Quote Link to comment
MtnHermit
Here's one I did in the Grand Canyon in March, edge of the south rim. I was struck by the almost identical elevation reading to the USGS monument. While I have photos of the canyon from this spot, not sure I have a landscape including the benchmark. The NGS is developing a similar photo collection, to support a help file explaining mark types and setting codes. We'd love to consider adding any unique photos you share via mailto: joe.evjen at noaa.gov Our primary aim is photos that help surveyors assess mark location and condition, vs pure artistry, but a great photo can tell a story AND look good. +cjf
We recently got back from a vacation to very Northern California (with a side trip into Oregon). Here are some of my favorite bench-marky pictures. While in Oregon, we crossed this very interesting bridge. I thought it looked like a good place for a benchmark so I peered at the bridge as my husband sped through. Sure enough! Saw one, stopped, and went on to find three benchmarks on that bridge! (The side trip to Oregon was a fluke, so I hadn't downloaded any Oregon benchmarks - but I got some anyway!) OA0833 Here's my favorite from my unsuccessful search for High Bluff 1871 LV1079. I call it "View from the disk that isn't LV1079." Quote Link to comment

lovetocachewithkids
RD 2153 Elevation 4,056' This picture was taken with a bit of acrobatics. To begin with, just a foot from the benchmark is a 500' dropoff, so there is a chainlink fence about a foot before the benchmark. Both pictures were taken through the chainlink fence. I dangled my camera over the top of the fence, stuck my hands through the chain link (lucky I have small hands). Edited July 10, 2008 by lovetocachewithkids Quote Link to comment
lovetocachewithkids
How completely random that we posted two benchmarks within miles of each other. Plus, I have to admit, I am the cache hider of the Crown Jewel cache that people complained that my cache was harder to find than the benchmark Edited July 10, 2008 by lovetocachewithkids Quote Link to comment

andylphoto
Okay...this one isn't exactly scenic, but the station itself is rather unique. It's not the oldest one around, but perhaps the one I've recovered that's got the most "character." Not just a standard disk set in concrete. RK0635 Quote Link to comment
