Got any pics of kayak caching?

 

I got a kayak for xmas, and I'm dying since it'll be months till it's usable in the midwest. There are only a few boat caches in my state, but I'm anxious to hit em all.

 

Might have to take the canoe out so the gf can come along though.

I got myself one at Christmas too and haven't taken it out yet. I'm still waiting for my paddle to come, should be today (I'm up the creek without a paddle!).

I've gone canoe/kayak caching a couple of times and can't wait to do more. There are a lot around here and the weather has been nice enough to go out several times since the holidays.

Do a lot of kayak and canoe trips and fishing - don't have any photos of caching yet - lots of camping and fishing.

 

Funny - I just learned of GeoCaching a month or 2 ago and within the first 2 days it occurred to me that Kayaks and caching would go well together and I thought of a perfect place for one, (Matanzas River ICW area near St. Augustine). Looked on the Google GeoCache map and found that someone was years ahead of me on this idea and spot - plus a dozen others are nearby.

Also Ironic that I live in the ONLY county in MN that doesn't have any natural lakes.

 

I created 2 boat caches last year, the first one failed, and the second one flooded badly right before it was going to go active. heh.

 

Hopefully I'll get to place a few this summer. Sooner or later I'll figure out how to do them right.

And we coined a new term in North Carolina. Bush-yaking: The lily pads were so intense on Harris Lake that it was a huge physical effort to paddle through them.

Here are some photos of Mr. 4BOWS and oldest son 4BOWS kayaking up the Snake River to the base of Shoshone Falls near Twin Falls, Idaho in search of a cache that is located near the bottom of the falls and only accessible by water. We found the cache and had a wonderful day.

Don’t have a kayak but have a small row boat that I use when going out with my buddies kayaking and canoing, only difference, I don't flip over.

 

At this cache location had a 180lb concrete cache tied around my waist with ropes as the two cachers in scuba gear got the cache open with a 24 in pipe wrench man, what we want do for a smiley

I love caching by kayak and since Joe posted the pics of me in scuba gear above, I figured I would post a few to prove that I am not always in the water, sometimes I actually stay in my kayak. BTW the temperature was in the forties in the scuba diving pics above, but you've got to do what you've got to do for the big FTF.

 

Here we are doing a series of water caches along the Cumberland River in Downtown Nashville.

 

Here is a cool cache that is actually inside an old warehouse that the current wharf was built on top of.

 

Another day when we encountered the General Jackson showboat while out on the Cumberland River.

 

Checking out a potential hiding spot on the Stones River.

While on the way to this cache, hidden in a hollow tree over the water.

 

Following Scoot along the backwaters of the Duck River.

 

And one with a whole gang of cachers following a tributary through a tunnel deep underground.

 

I bought a new paddle yesterday and I cannot wait until it gets warm enough to hit the water again.

Those of you who love paddle caches, you MUST come to Connecticut. I'm pretty sure we have the highest density of that type of cache anywhere. We may be the 48th smallest state in the USA, but at last look we had 66 active paddle caches in CT.

Once spring hits you can be sure we'll be adding even more.

There is a series of 11 caches on the Caddo River here Cachin' on the Caddo that I plan on doing when the weather warms up and we also get some water. There have only been a few finds on the whole series, but they weren't placed until last July when it was so hot and the water has probably been low since then.

 

I also have an AquaPac that use to carry my GPS, cell phone, and keys in and it sure comes in handy.

Any photo from this event, I nearly cried when it ended, seriously! Noooooo, it can't be over, I don't wanna get out of the river!!!!

Here are two of my many favorite people, the mann and Ttepee, that day on the Bantam River:

We rescued this woman and her daughter one day, in a flooded swamp, see my log and Ttepee's log.

 

I once tried to paddle the letters geo in script on a windy day, at this cache, to see if I could make the track on the map show up that way. It didn't work.

Here's a travel bug at this event. Plenty of photos in the gallery, and on the nearby caches that were placed for the event.

It was a rainy day, but cleared up later on when the event was winding down.

 

GeoHo, CT Trampers and Mopar on an island, there are photos at this event and the surrounding caches.

 

and OK, so this wasn't taken on the water, but was a most special part of the day. Mopar proposes to GeoHo, and she said YES.

I'm from Florida and we can yak anytime. If I'm succesful here are some pictures of a river CITO event on the Little Big Econolockhatchee River just east of Orlando.

The Jungle Island cache is the only one I've found so far that you have to find with a boat of some kind, and I found it in my old Dancer, but I've found Blow out bluff, the Richland Creek Geocache, and the Cascades of Extinction by kayak because it was the easiest way to get to them.

 

I'd love to find more via kayak but there aren't many around so I may just have to hide them.

Nice looking boat. As one might image from my handle I enjoy paddling as much as caching. I built a cedar strip Outer Island several years ago. A couple of summers ago a big storm came through that knocked a large maple tree branch (probably 40' long, 12" diameter). I had my kayak up on slings in the back yard and the tree branch hit it perpendicular across the cockpit. It essentially broke the boat in half, crushing all but four cedar strips. It's currently sitting in my basement undergoing repair. I have the hull completely restored and still have to replace all the strips on the deck around the cockpit. Fortunately I also have a fiberglass boat (and a whitewater kayak, and a canoe) that I used to do the following cache:

There is a series of 7 caches up on the Cannon River, probably not too far from you. There are plans for several more to be planted this early spring as winter thaws away. I believe there are, or soon will be, a series of caches on the Root River system as well.

I'm sure you'd be pleasantly surprised of how ez hosting an event would be, and how much of a turn-out you'd have! "IF you build it, they will come" Especially if your area has not had this type of an event before. I'd be willing to bet the yak, that your local geocachers would LOVE it! Hydro-events will most likely cache on quickly too!

 

Enjoy yourself by paddeling around the islands one day by yourself, and hide a few caches, then post the caches & the event for the launch site & have a tailgate party. Whola, there's your event!

 

May I suggest that the caches you hide hold rite-n-rain paper for a log book (waterproof paper). Micro's tied to trees wtih fishing line work well too. These are my fav. micros! Doesnt have to be a fancy container for trades. It's about the adventure, not the container/trade.....and paddeling to a cache for the 1st time is an AMAZING adventure!

I just did a PQ preview of 5 terrain caches in VA and found 51. They're not all boat caches, some of them are climbing caches, but with a list of 51 you can skim through and get the boat caches.

 

Not all boat caches will be correctly rated. Some will NOT be terrain rated 5, so you may miss some.

 

There are a couple of Florida cachers maintaining bookmarked list of hydrocaches, and of mis-rated hydrocaches. Perhaps you'll find something like that in Virginia - the boat cache pages themselves may yield bookmarked lists of others.

Like the terrain 5 rating, not all boat required caches will actually require a boat. Some people seem to use it for caches at a boat launch, or caches that you can see a body of water from, or even caches nowhere near water just to be "funny" (ps: purposely miss-rating caches is not funny).

Also, not everyone uses the attributes, especially on older caches placed before the attributes feature was added. Still, between the attribute and the terrain rating searches you should be able to turn up most hydrocaches in your state. Look on the caches you find to see if someone has a bookmark list. If there isn't one, start one for your state.

I thought it had been agreed in earlier forum threads that NJ had the densest cachers not CT?

Ohh paddle cache density...never mind then.

I just ran a PQ on Terrain 5 caches within 100 miles of home, and got 62 hits. I know 4-5 are land based, and 1-2 may be liar's caches.....or not?

We even offered a kayak caching run the day after Geowoodstock 5 for our paddle happy guests.

We own two kayak caches (on islands), and also another cache which must be accessed by either kayak or helicopter, and we have also logged a fair number of kayak caches. However, at this time in the mountains of western Maryland, it is the dead of winter, and our kayak is not currently in use. Now, some folks have wondered what kayaks do when they are not being used for kayaking in water during the off-seasons such as winter. Well, here is a photo that I took this morning of our inflatable kayak, which is stored upside down on the ceiling of our living room.

 

 

Kimba (the ginger male kitten) has been getting up on top of the kayak on his own for many months, and Jasmine (his cutie brunette sister) has long watched him with envy, but today was the first time that she figured out how to leap up there to join him; you see, you gotta hop from the floor to the top of the 5 gallon buckets and then onto the top of the bookcase by the window, then do a 180 degree turn, and then leap vertically 5 feet and horizontally 6 feet to land atop the kayak..... Kimba spends much of each day atop the kayak.

I know what you are wondering... My wife Sue wondered and worried about much the same thing when our kittens started to grow up and started a daily ritual -- back when the kayak was still sitting on the floor -- of scratching/sharpening their paws on the heavy-duty ballistic nylon fabric shells covering the inner vinyl inflatable bladders. I told her not to worry, and I explained to her with some smugness that the reason I had picked this two-person SOT (sit-on-top) kayak (it is an Airhead TK-2 and it is nearly bulletproof) over competing models and brands was largely because the vinyl air bladders in the Airhead are entirely encased in heavy-duty high-denier ballistic nylon, and due to the additional fact that the bottom of the boat is also covered in a urethane-coated nylon fabric as well, rendering the entire boat almost entirely immune to punctures from sharp objects. Sure enuf, the kittens and their mommy have now been sharpening their claws on the fabric shell of the boat for many months now, with nary a problem. In any case, my philosophy is that if I owned an inflatable kayak that was so delicate and fragile that a cat's claws could damage the boat, well then, I would NEVER want to trust such a boat on the water, because our rivers around here (that is, the rivers on which we go kayaking) are littered with far worse things than cat's claws! Sue was a reluctant convert at first, sure that the cat's claws would destroy the boat, but she now admits that the cat's claws are unable to do anything significant to the ballistic nylon fabric shells, much less to the vinyl air bladders inside the shells.

 

BTW, we have put two years of heavy river kayaking on this kayak, with nary a problem to show for it. We even took it to a geo river/kayaking event once, where we loaned it to perhaps five different anonymous geocachers (i.e., strangers) who were seeking some nearby river caches, and it stood up to even that level of abuse just fine. I would recommend this particular model to anyone searching for a nearly bulletproof inflatable SOT kayak.
