There could only be one

Greetings hungry Race bug owners and other interested people,

To honour the effort that you put in, the kilometres that you travelled, the thorn trees that ripped your skin, the wives (and possible husbands) that wont speak to you anymore, the government tax coffers that you filled and many other things I have given the winners announcement its own thread here in the SA forum. Here I hope to list the final standings, point interested folk to the relevant race web pages, talk a little on the happenings of the race and keep your interests from work for a few minutes.

Firstly thank you to all who participated, to the 20 race bug owners I hope you had fun. I hope you enjoyed watching your bug’s travels. Talking about travelling, would you believe that our small little bugs have travelled a massive 135,817 km during the duration of the race.

89 cachers have helped them do this and I thank each of them now (alphabetical order) Amyson, anlufu, barking mad, batdude1, batsgonemad and his squirrel, battlerat and pussycat, bosveldklong, Brick, Bushpigs, Cabey, cache-fan, cownchicken, dakardrix, DamhuisClan, Dampies, deon_engel, DiePienaars, Discombob, Donkasand, Ducky and Mucky, eragonSaphira, Fish Eagle, Gee Spot, Gen.Rick, Geo Stapo, GeoPoppit, Gerald, GlobalRat, Goofster, Gps Storm, GPSMouse, GreenJaM, Guineafowl, Hendre69, iNokia, iPajero, itchyknee, Jakkals en Eendjie, johannengelbrecht, JohnMcF, Jors, katundu, Klebe, Krazong, Kwenda Tafuta, landy 2001, landy 247, Larks, LeonW, Littleclan, Looney Larkman, Megaben, minister85, Neville Bailey, nic777, Nish4, Noddy, QFC, radebuddyz, RedGlobe, Rhino and Hedgehog, River God, ShambleRamble, Sippy Dippy, streides, taeros, Tanktrax, Team Katsie, Team_Farmers, Team_Olo, TeamTGF, TerraTiger, The Dobies, the pooks, The Sunrise Crew, Tim&Brig, Tiny Bubbles, TinyTigger, Tom&sons, Trackinfind, Tricky Vicky & Mickey, Urban Hunters, vespax, warthog, Wazat, whatknots, Whostops, Wildbirds, Ysbeer.

Some cachers helped more than was expected and I have to make mention of the “usual” suspects for keeping the Cape’s name up in lights; Tricky Vicky & Mickey and cownchicken managed to move certain bugs… A LOT! B) (the cape conspiracy has been turned on it’s head) Thank you for a wonderful effort.

4 bugs managed to finish the race, with 4 others being lost along the way. So now to get you and me back to work the winner of the race was Rupert Rex who is owned by Tricky Vicky & Mickey. Second place goes to Die Rooi Gevaar (cownchicken), third to Frustrated 4*4 (warthog) and forth goes to James' leaping lizard (colinaly).

Will the owners please pass their postal addresses to Noddy via GC mail so we can arrange to hand out the prizes.

For the final standings and calculations document got to www.geocachingranking.com/Tracking/tbrace2007.aspx and www.geocachingranking.com/Tracking/ 2007RaceBugs.xls respectively.

But this is not the end……. What about 2008. Should we pass the torch back to the Cape? Should we race with coins? What it the plan? I offer www.geocachingranking.com to track the progress of the race (I will write the site, someone else can data capture ;) )

Well Done to the winners! B);)

3 cheers to the Cape Teams!!

The last 2 TB races have both involved a lot of cajoling and bribing and scratching of backs and general shenanigans and goings on.

I propose something different for next race, in that the TBs can leave the country, so as to even the playing fields, with points being clocked for distance travelled, number of countries visited, and difficulty and terrain ratings visited.

THE ONLT PROBLEM WITH that is that a year is to little time for TB to leave the country and return as we dont have that many travelers in and out the country, a race like that would have to be over a year or two

Now then congratulations to the 4 bugs that made it hope they had a great time, thanks to the organiseres and all their work and effort, What are the prises given to the finishers

Ah, now see Bats, thats the problem, you have blinkers on based on the previous 2 races. Why does a TB race need to have a start and end point?

The one I propose can start and end anywhere!

QFC, I suppose now that i have broadband, and 4 days off a week, and lots of cold weather to keep me indoors, I theoretically could be the race organiser/moderator/tracker guy.

However, i have no technical skills or html knowledge at all.

I suppose i could do it all manually, and send you the rankings to keep updated on your website?

I'll start thinking of the rules and system!

Right, I've managed to figure it all out, except the precise point values to be supplied.

- I propose the race starts on 1Feb, to allow time for TBs to be prepared. Unless you folks think its more romantic to start on Valentines day?

- TBs must be new ones which have not travelled. New geocoins will also be accepted in the race. Owners may label or tag their TBs with race info as they see fit.

- TBs can start at any cache of the owners choosing (In South Africa only), and can end anywhere.

Expats such as Bats, John_gill, etc may enter a TB, but this needs to be posted to a cacher in SA for release.

- Tbs can go anywhere in the world

Points will be given for the following:

- distance travelled in 20km units (a jump less than 20km doesn't count)

- per cache visited. These will be further broken down into type of cache, with reg getting few points, then multi, then puzzle and virtual, then earthcache, then webcam getting top points.

- Per terrain and difficulty star rating.

- per country visited. The countries will be broken down into 4 groupings, each worth diferent points.

Country groupings currently are:

- group 1 - USA, UK, Australia,

- group 2 - Canada, NZ, Western Europe, Swaziland, Lesotho

- group 3 - Eastern Europe, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana

- group 4 - Africa, central and South America, Middle East, Asia (including Russia)

- extra points will also be given if a TB visits a cache on an FTF

- Extra points will be given if a TB visits a cache with a certain word in the title. I have a list of 50 words to use. I won't list them all here but examples are mountain, river, giant, gold, time, North etc.

- TBs can make multiple jumps with the same cacher, but will only be awarded the points for the highest value cache and single distance of the journey. The other points will not count.

- owners can move their TBs 10 times during the race, but any points they get for that distance, terrain rating etc will be halved. Owners may not do multiple hops though.

- Extra points will be given for the 5 best photos logged on the TB page. Owners to please send their applications to me near the end of the race if they think they have a great photo.

- At my discretion, I might award points for the cutest TB or flashest coin, based on the main home page photo. (I will probably not be entering the race)

So thats it. No head chopping, unless Theres just too many TBs, and I'm feeling lazy!

Let me know what you think.
