Garmin car charger

I have a car charger from Gomadic with a tip for my Verizon XV6700 phone. I noticed that it has the same kind of plug on the end as the connector on the back of my Garmin Legend CX. Would I ruin something by trying to see if this will power the Garmin? :P

I tried using an incorrect charger on a FRS radio to see if it would work. The radio started pouring black smoke. I haven't bothered to try a new set of batteries yet..... :P

Most of the newer Garmins will receive power through the USB port, and AFAIK, that is the only way the news eTrexes will receive power.

Isn't USB a standard? Shouldn't a USB power cord for one device work for all other devices?

I would imagine so, but I wanted to ask here anyway.

USB is standard, but depending on the quality of the cig adapter, you might have slightly more or less juice than a USB connection from your PC would have. Some devices can handle this variation with no problem. Others might have pretty severe problems, I would think.

Any car adapter with mini-USB (5 volt) would work.

It'll charge your rechargeable GPS devices.

For 60CSx it would just power it.

Either they works, I didn't have any miniUSB car adapter, didn't feel like making my owns, so I ended up buying a actual power adapter.

I think I should have just bought a miniUSB car adapter as it is little chaper.

Well, yes, mostly. The spec is 5vDC. Whether it'll fry your device depends on the manufacturer's interpretation and implementation of "5 volts." Do they take it to mean 5v +/- 0.5, or +/- 0.1 ??? I'd think as long as it has a brand you recognize and trust it's probably OK.

I worry about the Blackberry chargers with my GPS unit. I know that the current from the USB on my laptop is not enough to power the Blackberry unless I install the drivers from RIM to the computer. Also my Motorola and Garmin chargers won't power the Blackberry so I hesitate to use the Blackberry charger on the other units.
