Help! I'm new at this and haven't managed to find any caches yet.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I live in Wymondham, Norfolk. I have tried to find 2 caches but didn't even get close. I don't know what I was doing wrong. Is there anyone who lives nearby that can help me or show me how to do this?

I feel quite disheartened, but I don't want to give up.

Please help!

Ok quick question. Are you using a GPS yet? And have you made sure you have it set to the WGS84 datum?

Also which caches have you been looking for there are a couple that are currently unavailable in Wymondham.

Legs Eleven and Tickle's Treasure so if they are the ones you cannot find then thats your answer.

Welcome to the madhouse hobby by the way. :santa:

Red Squadron aka John & Ann will be only to pleased to help out. Hows about allocating one day and go and seek out a cache or two. We are not the most experienced but we do have 30 or so caches to our name. Thats a start.

1 ) Buy GPS

2 ) Buy Batteries

3 ) Put Batteries in GPS

4 ) Take them out and put them in right way round

5 ) Find the ON button (sometimes harder than it looks - believe me! )

6 ) Suddenly remember that even if its on you are doing this inside

7 ) Go outside and wave GPS at the sky - check its still on!

8 ) WAIT

9 ) GPS little whirly images etc stop whirling and suddenly you have a set of figures

10 ) They may be the wrong set of figures

11 ) Find out what's meant by WGS84

12 ) Get depressed - dont give up!

13 ) Go back inside with GPS still on.

14 ) Fix a very stiff drink.

15 ) repeat stage 14

16 ) Get out the manual

17 ) Fall asleep

18 ) Finally learn how to set your GPS to display coords in the way GC.COM does

19 ) Finally discover how to set up WGS84 on your GPS

20 ) Log onto GC.COm and get your nearest easy cache details

21 ) Find its location is on the other side of an estuary - yep that happens as well!

22 ) Read manual again

23 ) Learn how to enter your coordinate destination.

24 ) Eat chococlate - brain food!

25 ) Discover pointy thing only works outside

26 ) Follow pointy thing - (not literally - we nearly fell down a ravine)

27 ) As you get closer pointy thing does silly things and behaves badly

28 ) Get excited

29 ) Read clue

30 ) FIND GEOCACHE

Oh yes I almost forgot, we live at Whittington near Stoke Ferry / Downham Market. Its not far from Wymondham, as the crow flies.

You might like to contact Rich and Kathrine who are local to you:

Wymondham Wanderers

...I'm sure they would be delighted to assist you in getting started :santa: .

We live at Dereham, not far from you and would be happy to help you get going - unfortunately though, we are both wage slaves and our diaries are pretty full for the next few weekends for obvious reasons.

If you're still struggling in the New Year, we'd be happy to lead you astray.

Hi, Welcome to the game!

Just thought I'd answer your earlier question about datums. Basically your gps works out it's co-ordinates by comparing it's present position to a set datum point. There are several different systems in use but all you really need to know is that geocaching.com uses one called WGS84, so your GPS unit needs to be set to use this. I don't know what unit you've got, but it should be somewhere on the main settings menu.

You can download (for free) a gps beginners guide from Garmin here.

Hope this helps, I'm only in Swaffham so would be pleased to help if I can.
