BetsyChaput Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 My son is a college freshman majoring in Wilderness Leadership. I'd like to get him a handheld GPS that has internal memory and will accept data cards. Does this make sense? And if so, what unit should I get? It seems that all the Garmin ones have either internal memory or take data cards, but I can't find one that has both features. What else should I be looking for? Thank you. Betsy Quote

Betsy I'm not sure about other models right off the top of my head, but all the nuvi series have both. Heh, heh...missed the wilderness leadership part of your post. +fratermus Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I'd like to get him a handheld GPS that has internal memory and will accept data cards. Does this make sense? It makes sense as in "we understand what you are saying". It makes less as in "we understand what you are trying to accomplish". IIRC all Garmin handheld units that take eXpansion cards (those with X in the name) do have internal memory but it is for waypoints, routes, and tracks. Maps live on the card. Internal map memory even on those GPSr that have it is not very big compared to the cards you can get for $10-20 these days. I suspect most people put the maps on the card and never think about it again. I believe the Magellan eXplorist 400/500 have trivial amounts of built-in memory and card expandability if it is really important. Quote

Betsy Forget about the nuvi units as they are for auto navigation and don't tend to gell well with his major. If you are looking to get a Garmin, look at their "On the Trail" product line, and compare the mapping handhelds. The eTrex Vista HCx, GPSMAP 60CSx or GPSMAP 76CSx are their top shelf units. Also worth looking into is the Rino 530HCx that also has a FRS/GMRS 2-way radio built in. These units all have their map memory as a microSD card, but do have internal memory for waypoints, routes and tracks. Quote

+fratermus Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 What do you mean by "nuvi" units? The Nuvi is a GPS made by Garmin. As another poster pointed out, they are not well-suited for outdoor use. Quote
