Is it legal, for the owner of a coin, to take a picture of the coin and leave it in a cache? And the owner holds onto the coin.

Why not I think it's legal as long as he doesn't circulate his original coin at the same time. Are they "leaving it there" as an option for others to "discover"?

It's called a proxy or copy. It is "legal" and this topic comes up often. A coin owner can do what they want with their coin and tracking number, except maybe make a cache out of it.

Legal? I'd say so. I've yet to see an LEO take someone away for it at least!

Legal; yes Lame; yes. You can see a pic online anytime. I'd much rather someone just keep the coin in their collection than release a copy. IMHO

How would people feel if the owner wanted to release a copy because the original went missing? The description could say that it's paper and the reason for it, so those in search of the metal can pass this one by.

 

Would that make it legit?

 

I've been thinking of doing this simply because I've had a few coins go missing with coin icons and there are those that do like to collect the icons.

Some people like it, some people don't

Many do not seem to mind very much one way or the other

 

It seems to come down to what the person is after

If it is an icon, a copy usually seems to be enough

If it is a found count to add to trackable items, a copy usually seems to be enough

For those who like to hold the little lump of metal in their hand, a copy often seems lacking

 

One recommended compromise is to put "copy" in the item name

This way, those hoping to see the actual coin will not rush out to a cache and be disapointed

 

Personally, given a choice between finding a copy of a coin and finding nothing at all, I will take the copy every time
